Mancini: Bridge will not snub England call-up
By Soccernet staff
Wayne Bridge will not turn down a call-up to the England squad for next month's international friendly against Egypt, according to Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini.
Bridge seems certain to be promoted to England's first choice left-back following the news that Ashley Cole will probably miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle.
That means that the former Chelsea and Southampton player will line-up in the same defence as John Terry just weeks after their personal affairs were splashed all over the tabloid press, leading to Terry losing the England captaincy.
Speculation in some newspapers suggested that Bridge could even announce his retirement from international football as he felt unable to play in the same team as Terry. But Mancini insists that is nonsense.
"He never told me that he wouldn't play for England,'' said Mancini. "The national team is important. I have not spoken to him but I think, if he is picked, he will play.
"He is committed to playing for England. It is important for any player to play at the World Cup. It is important for their career, especially if they can play in the first XI.''
Mancini, meanwhile, revealed that Bridge is still playing "at around 60%" as he recovers from a knee injury sustained against Chelsea in December.
