Desailly expects United to triumph over AC Milan

Former France captain Marcel Desailly has told Soccernet he is backing Manchester United to overpower AC Milan when the two sides meet in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Desailly, who played in both the Premier League for Chelsea and Serie A for the Rossoneri, believes that United's desire to avenge last season's final defeat to Barcelona, coupled with a greater experience of playing at the top level over the past few years, will spur them on to victory.

"Manchester United's ambition is to win both [the Premier League and Champions League] and they are the only team I look at and think can potentially win the two," Desailly told Soccernet. "They suffered from last season's Champions League Final and want revenge.

"Every time they play against a top team, they have quality and are not scared. They have so many experienced players who have played in so many big games. That will make the difference."

Milan's domestic form of late has been indifferent after an impressive Ronaldinho-inspired run saw them move back into contention for the Scudetto over Christmas.

Roma have now climbed above them into second place in the Serie A standings, and Desailly thinks Milan boss Leonardo should concentrate on guiding his team through what is a transitional stage for the club - with the end goal set at regaining Serie A supremacy.

"Leonardo did not start very well but he has surprised a few people," Desailly said. "Luckily he is working in a club that gives him the go-ahead to work hard with no pressure.

"AC Milan's priority is to get back to the top level in Italy. They need to continue to build up their team and do not have the conviction to win the Champions League."

Desailly insisted that in Brazil forward Ronaldinho, Milan still hold a match-winning player capable of the sublime, but he believes United will have all the answers over two legs.

"When you talk about talent, Ronaldinho's personifies it - any time he can make the difference. But United play devastating counter-attacking football with Rooney leading the way - it's going to be a tough tie but Manchester will cope."

Arsenal are missing a further five first-team players due to injury as they head to Portugal for the first leg of their Champions League tie against Porto.

Defender William Gallas (back), midfielder Alex Song (knee) and Andrei Arshavin (hamstring) were all absent from the 18-man squad which left Luton Airport on Tuesday afternoon, as were goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and striker Eduardo (hamstring).
