Absent trio can galvanise us, says Kim

Hong Kong: South China coach Kim Pan-gon quashed fears the absence of the Hong Kong side’s foreign stars will put them at a disadvantage when they tackle Al Riffa at Hong Kong Stadium on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup.
Brazilian strikers Leo (Leonardo Ferreira da Silva) and Tales Schutz are suspended for the match along with fellow countryman Sidraílson (Sidraílson da Mata Ribeiro), leaving Kim no choice but to field a side comprised entirely of Hong Kong players.
But the South Korean coach dismissed concerns that his side will be weaker for their absence and placed his faith in the local players to secure victory over Al Riffa.
“As we know, we don’t have foreign players available but our teamwork could maybe be stronger than before because they are all local players,” said Kim.
“Without foreign players we will be stronger organised. We will be more united. If we have foreign players we have some advantages but without them we also have other advantages.
“We have had good preparations over the last week and we look organised defensively and attacking-wise as well. Our team spirit and physical condition is very good.”
South China set a tournament record when 37,459 fans watch their semi-final defeat to eventual champions Kuwait Sports Club in last year’s tournament.
Tickets for Tuesday’s match have been selling fast and a bumper crowd is expected once again, much to the delight of Kim.
“When they (the fans) come to support us we play well,” he added. “I expect many people will come and watch us tomorrow.
“It will be a big boost for us and we will give them 100% and make them proud.”
A big boost for South China could be the return of Chan Siu Ki after Kim hinted the club’s top scorer, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury, could take his place amongst the substitutes.
Al Riffa coach Jose Garrido, meanwhile, was wary that the absence of South China’s foreign stars could work against the Bahrain side.
“I know these players, they are very good but for sure the local players will do everything and try to show they have the ability to be in the first 11,” he said.
“This could make things more difficult for us.”
Another factor of concern for Garrido is the weather in Hong Kong, with rain forecasted for Tuesday’s match.
“The weather is very different from Bahrain,” he added. “We have a problem with the rain as we usually don’t play in these conditions but I think we will be ready.
“Our preparation has been as good as for all the other games.”
Garrido has no suspension or new injury concerns but confirmed Ismail Abdullatif could figure after the Bahrain international returned from injury.
