Marchetti responds to his critics Friday 23 July, 2010

Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti has shrugged off criticism of his performances at the World Cup in South Africa.
The 27-year-old had to stand in for Gigi Buffon for almost three matches after Italy's No 1 suffered a back injury in their opening match against Paraguay.
He was voted one of the worst shot stoppers at the World Cup and faces a battle to keep his place under Cesare Prandelli.
When asked if he looks at the individual ratings, Marchetti said: “It's not the case. There is a little regret, we could have given something more - it was the chance of a lifetime.
“Italy lacked the spark to open up. We were confused against Slovakia because we felt that it was a decisive game and we didn't manage to do what we had to.
“We paid dearly for every mistake and remedying that when the opponents sit back is very tough.”
Marchetti then gave an insight as to what he expects under Prandelli.
“He has great determination and is starting again with another objective. I will try and give my best, that's obvious. I really hope to be there.
“The competition is ruthless in anticipation of Buffon's return. But it will be a stimulating challenge. Among the youngsters, I admire Sirigu who I saw at the pre-World Cup training camp. Then there is Storari who dragged Samp into the Champions League, De Sanctis, Abbiati and Sorrentino.
“Buffon is still the No 1. My relationship with him is good. It's direct. He has always spoken well of me and said nice things after the elimination.
“I continue to see him as a role model. He was disappointed like us in South Africa.”
Marchetti then revealed that he held out hope of joining Sampdoria this summer.
“I went through the end of the season and training camp with Italy hoping for an opportunity at Samp.
“It's normal to be ambitious. I thought about improving myself, having a new challenge, and growing on an international stage in the Champions League.
“There is regret of that there isn't any doubt. But I cost too much and I stayed at Cagliari. I owe this club a lot.”
