Van der Vaart out of Blues clash

Rafael van der Vaart has been ruled out of Tottenham's clash with Chelsea on Sunday because of injury.

Van der Vaart has made a huge impact since making a summer move from Real Madrid, but fitness has been a problem.

He limped off early on in the 2-1 win over Liverpool on November 28 and has not featured since. He was said to be in contention for the midweek Champions League clash with Twente, but he remained on the sidelines and is still struggling with a hamstring injury.

Harry Redknapp had hoped to bring him back against Chelsea, but the midfielder has failed to respond to treatment and Spurs will go into the derby without one of their most potent creative forces.

Luka Modric, though, will be available again after recovering from the illness that kept him out of the draw with Twente.

First-team coach Joe Jordan said: "Luka's okay. He trained on Wednesday and it was just a safety precaution (at Twente) because he was feeling the effects of a bug."

Jordan also confirmed that Younes Kaboul would return to training and was in contention for inclusion on Sunday, but Niko Kranjcar and Jermaine Jenas are out.

"It's disappointing for JJ," Jordan said. "He's had a recurrence of his calf injury, so he's not in the running for Chelsea."

Newcastle willing to sell Barton

ESPNsoccernet understands Newcastle United would be willing to let Joey Barton go in the transfer window because of his high wages.

West Ham are keen to sign the player and Newcastle have asked for £5 million, but the Hammers would offer only £1.25 million. The offer could increase to £2 million, but only on condition that Barton, 28, takes a massive drop in his £67,000-a-week salary.

A source close to the negotiations said: "It is clear that Newcastle need to balance their books and offload some players on big wages.

"Asking £5 million is fine, but West Ham won't pay anywhere near that amount, and would want the player to take a big drop in wages before anything can happen in the January transfer window."

It has been suggested that Barton, who has just 18 months left on his contact, would like a five-and-a-half-year deal at Upton Park. West Ham would prefer a three-and-a-half-year deal.

A Hammers insider told ESPNsoccernet: "It's Joey Barton's salary that kills any deal."

The impasse suggests that, if he does move on, East London is unlikely to be his destination and several other Premier League clubs are said to be interested.

Even if a move to West Ham were to be completed, the Hammers remain keen to retain Scott Parker.

Parker, 30, has attracted interest from both Tottenham and Liverpool but his £20 million valuation is almost certain to prove prohibitive. Tottenham, who offered £7 million in the summer, are as yet only willing to up that bid by £1 million.

No hope for progress under Ashley

By Kevin Keegan

Chris Hughton's shock departure from St James' Park this week has once again demonstrated that Newcastle United need some stability, but you will never get stability when you have Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias running the club. Ashley has made no secret that he wants to sell Newcastle, and the best day will come when someone buys it from him and runs Newcastle like that club should be run. The club can never go anywhere under Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias - it can't go anywhere, I promise you that.

I do not understand the decision to get rid of Chris. I lived with the same people for eight months - I didn't understand them then and I don't understand them now, and I don't think many of the fans do. When a man buys a club like Mike Ashley did, and he knows as little about football as he does, he is likely to make these sort of mistakes and these sort of judgements, and still think he is doing okay.

When you get the fans saying it is the wrong decision, when you get the players saying it is wrong and when you even get the press saying it is wrong, it tells you, unsurprisingly, that the decision is the wrong one. The news won't have come as a total surprise to Chris, having worked with the people he had been working with for the best part of two and a bit years. He knew what he was dealing with.

It's almost impossible to work in that environment, and that's why I take my hat off to Chris for getting on with it for as long as he did. He hung in there, did a great job under difficult circumstances, with very little investment, and his reward for that is for them to say, 'Thanks very much Chris, you did a great job but we don't want you any more'. The decision is not a reflection on his work at Newcastle, it is a sad reflection on the people running the football club.

Chris certainly deserved to be treated a lot better, but I think the one thing he has got in his favour is that he can walk away knowing full well that the fact those in charge at Newcastle got rid of him is no reflection on the job he did during his time at the club. I don't know what the reason is; you would have to ask Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. Not many people understand the rationale behind the decision.

It does appear they wanted to remove Chris for a while though. Their minds were made up a long time ago, but results like the 6-0 win over Aston Villa, the 5-1 win against Sunderland and the 1-0 victory at Arsenal made it awkward for them to do so. They waited for an opportune time and the moment presented itself when a couple of results didn't go very well. It would surprise a lot of people, but it does not surprise me.

So what has Chris gained from being at Newcastle? Well, tremendous experience for a start. He was a coach when he went there and, now he has left, he is a manager. If he wants to go back to coaching that would be his choice, but he has proved he can thrive in a leading role. Chris got Newcastle promoted with 102 points in the Championship last season, he was named manager of the year, so if he wants to pursue that avenue, there will be plenty of people who will be very impressed by what he has done at St James' Park. It is disappointing the way it has come to an end, but I don't think, deep down, Chris will be that surprised, knowing the people he was dealing with at the club.

Alan Pardew was confirmed as his replacement on Wednesday and although he is more experienced than Chris was when he started the job, he is not vastly experienced. He has managed for 17 months in the Premier League. But Alan's a good lad. I know him well, he is very dedicated and he works very hard. The sad thing is that Alan is going in and is getting off on the wrong foot through no fault of his own.

The supporters won't be resistant to Alan because of the circumstances of his appointment, though. Any criticism will be levelled at Llambias and Mike Ashley, because it is their decision. The fans would be wrong to pick on Alan. Obviously if results don't go well then they may start to voice discontent, but Alan is just the meat in the middle of the sandwich here.

Deep down, Newcastle fans know they are in a difficult situation because at the moment the man who owns the club doesn't really want it; he has said that publicly. Ashley wants to sell , but also wants to make money and in the current financial climate that will be difficult. Newcastle are in a bit of a corner at the moment, but one thing the fans will do is support the team. The current situation is not the fault of the players, and they will be supported from the stands providing that they give the effort required when you wear that famous shirt. However, Newcastle fans are never going to get behind the current regime, because they have seen too much evidence of things they don't like.

Allardyce keen on Spurs duo

Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce would be interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur duo Robbie Keane or David Bentley if they become available in January.

Striker Keane and midfielder Bentley have found their chances limited at White Hart Lane this season and Allardyce will keep an eye on developments, but believes he will be in a long queue for their services.

Allardyce said: "If Tottenham say that Robbie Keane and David Bentley are available then you are always interested in quality players. If they are, then I think we will be one of many, many clubs in the Premier League who would be interested."

He added: "I have identified some targets and some talks have started - I've discussed it with the chairman and he will discuss it with the new owners.

"It's just a question of how much, that's the key element because there are various targets at various prices and we will not rule out a loan signing either."

Allardyce and Spurs boss Harry Redknapp were named by England boss Fabio Capello as candidates to succeed him after Euro 2012 but the Rovers manager would not be drawn on that likelihood.

He said: "I hope they stick to having an English manager next. Whether that's me in contention I don't know but it's very nice of Fabio to mention my name. It's very flattering especially when it's a man of his standing in the game.

"But it's too far away to consider that situation. When he said he was going to move on when the European Championships finished and everybody asked the question, I said 'it depends what I'm doing at that particular time and how well I'm doing'.

"They may also have a change of heart and decide it's not going to be an Englishman."

United's Evans facing loan spell?

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans could be sent out on loan in a bid to rebuild his confidence, according to reports.

Evan's was hauled off during United's 4-0 Carling Cup humiliation at West Ham and didn't even make the bench for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Valencia at Old Trafford.

United have conceded 15 goals in the nine league games the defender has played this season and according to The Sun, manager Sir Alex Ferguson could send him out on loan.

Evans, who has previously been out on loan at Sunderland and Royal Antwerp in Belgium, has played 77 times for United but admits he is facing a tough battle to get back in the team.

"This is probably the biggest challenge I have had," the 22-year-old said. "It is the first time I have been taken out of the team because of performances."

Up until this season, centre-back Evans had been predicted to have a bright future at Old Trafford, regularly being called into action whenever Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic were not available.
