Newcastle United veteran Sol Campbell is being linked with a move to West Ham United as Avram Grant and club owners David Gold and David Sullivan weigh up allowing Matthew Upson to leave the club.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is being tipped to swoop for 31-year-old Upson, four years after selling the England international to Birmingham City, as he looks to add further options to a defence struggling without injured Thomas Vermaelen.
Campbell, who himself spent the second half of last season at his former club in N5, is understood to be disappointed at the manner in which Chris Hughton was sacked by Magpies owner Mike Ashley in December and also by his lack of first team football.
Experienced in the art of motivation and still physically capable of playing at the highest level despite being 36-years-old, it appears that Campbell is the man that Grant is looking to turn to as he tries to rescue the Hammers from the relegation zone.
Wenger meanwhile remained coy last night when questioned about his interest in old boy Upson. Speaking in the aftermath of Arsenal’s Carling Cup defeat to Championship side Ipswich, the French tactician explained:
"Let's not think that we lost the game because we haven't bought a central defender.
"We lost the game because we didn't play as well as we can.
"We have only two central defenders and we are short but I do not want to speak about any particular name.
"Frankly I am just disappointed about our defeat. It is early to talk about a player coming in.
"We have nine games in January and it happens sometimes that you don't always play well in every game.
"As a team we did not have the performance we wanted. We were below our usual level in every department and it would be unfair to put the blame in the defence."

Tuncay eyes bids from Facebook video
Frustrated Stoke striker Tuncay Sanli has posted a Top 10 compilation of the best goals of his career on Facebook in an apparent dig at Tony Pulis' unwillingness to play him regularly.
Tuncay, 28, is determined to secure a move away from the Britannia Stadium having started 29 of his 53 games for the club from the bench since moving from Middlesbrough for £5 million in August 2009.
And with no obvious interest in the Turkey international manifesting itself, he has decided to take matters into his own hands by engaging in some serious self-promotion on his Facebook page .
Tuncay could be at risk of putting off potential suitors, though, as seven of the ten strikes came when he was at Turkish club Fenerbahce - who he has not played for in three years.
But a goal in English football was the Turk's No. 1 pick on the social networking site, with his last goal for Middlesbrough - an overhead kick against Aston Villa - pipping the other strikes to top spot.
The Sun quoted a source close to Tuncay as saying: "Retaining team shape is not his major asset but there is little doubt another club would surely welcome his maverick talent and this video shows exactly what he is all about.
"It's an unusual way for a top player to try to sell himself but maybe it will work."
