Fifa boss Sepp Blatter offers Celts Olympic assurance
Fifa boss Sepp Blatter says the Celtic nations' international status would not be affected by their players' turning out for a Great Britain Olympic team.
The British Olympic Association hopes Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will join England in fielding a team in the 2012 London Games.
But each of the Celtic nations has expressed fears that doing so could harm their independence in the game.
But Blatter said: "It's very clear. If they play, there is no sanction."
Speaking at the International Football Association Board (Ifab) annual meeting in Newport, south Wales, Fifa president Blatter said his organisation has done all it can to help the BOA persuade the four home nations to form a team for the London Games.
In response to a question from BBC Sport Wales he said: "The Fifa executive committee has dealt with this matter and even given it to the congress.
"And the decision was that for the Olympic football tournaments - men and women - the Olympic committee of Great Britain they have to compose or to present a team.
"And the team will run under the denomination 'British Olympic team'. The composition of this team, the Fifa has said, is absolutely free to the Olympic committee of GB and to the four British associations.
"And this composition has no influence on any privileges existing actually with Fifa, according to the decisions taken in 1946 at a Fifa congress in Luxembourg.
"So it's very clear. If they play, there is no sanction from the Fifa part." |
