Andre Villas-Boas has left £20million striker Romelu Lukaku out of Chelsea's Champions League squad.
Lukaku, 18, has been sacrificed by Villas-Boas because Chelsea did not have enough 'homegrown' players to maximise their 25-man squad.

Michael Essien has also been omitted because of his long-term knee injury and so has Ryan Bertrand, an English victim of spending so long on loan at different clubs.
Chelsea have only been able to name 22 players on their 'A List' for the Champions League because they only have John Terry who qualifies as one of four allotted 'club trained' places.
It is a problem every year. Last year, Paulo Ferreira missed out but since the sale of Yury Zhirkov and failure to sign Alvaro Pereira from Porto Ferriera will be needed as potential cover at left-back.
Frank Lampard, Daniel Sturridge, Ross Turnbull and Ashley Cole make up the four 'association trained' places. Teenagers Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah can both play because they qualify on the 'B List'.
Bertrand's omission makes a mockery of the homegrown rule. He is English born but fails to meet the criteria because he was not registered at Chelsea for three years between the ages of 15 and 21. |
