Rennes drops Yann M'Vila and Chris Mavinga after their nightclub outing on under-21 duty
RENNES, France - Rennes has dropped two players who were among five from France's Under-21 squad who went to a nightclub between two playoff games for the 2013 European Championship.
Rennes says midfielder Yann M'Vila and centre half Chris Mavinga have not been included in the squad to face Montpellier on Saturday in the French league.
"The decision to remove (drop) Chris Mavinga and Yann M'Vila from the professional squad is delicate but obligatory. Rennes can no longer tolerate irresponsible behaviour from certain players," the club said in a statement on Friday. "It's a strong decision which is shared by the club directors despite the sporting conseqeunces. It's a moral question."
Rennes did not specify how long the players will be dropped, and ordered both of them to train with the youth team.
M'Vila and Mavinga, along with Real Sociedad's Antoine Griezmann, AC Milan's Mbaye Niang and rising Toulouse star Wissam Ben Yedder, went out in Paris before the return match against Norway on Tuesday, when France lost 5-3 to end their qualification hopes.
M'Vila, a powerful holding midfielder with 22 senior caps for France, has seen his career nosedive after being linked with a move to Arsenal last season.
The 22-year-old was also suspended by the French Football Federation for one match after refusing to shake the hand of coach Laurent Blanc and substitute Olivier Giroud when he was taken off against Spain in the European Championship quarterfinals.
Although he had served his one-game ban, France coach Didier Deschamps did not include him in his squad for the World Cup qualifier against Spain, which was drawn 1-1 in Madrid on Tuesday.
