Barcelona to wear ‘senyera’ kit at Camp Nou against Athletic Club Bilbao
by Heath Chesters | Posted on Thursday, September 11th, 2014
Barcelona and Athletic Club Bilbao have both agreed to wear their away kits in Saturday’s La Liga encounter, with the home side set to sport their ‘senyera’ colours at the Camp Nou, for the first time in the club’s history for a home game.
Saturday 11th September is tri-centennial Diada Nacional de Catalunya (National Day of Catalonia) and to celebrate, with the permission of the LFP and Athletic Club Bilbao also in agreement, Barcelona will wear their red and yellow ‘senyera’ kit.
The significance of this is that not only will they be sporting the Catalan colours, it will be the very first time in FC Barcelona history, the team will have worn these colours for a home match at the Camp Nou. The ‘senyera’ kit was worn by the team regularly for away matches last season and the shirt proved to be one of the best selling of all time.
The Barcelona shirt, which will be worn at home on this unique occasion, features “the four bars” in red on yellow of the Catalan national flag, the Senyera. Athletic Club Bilbao will also be wearing their away kit, with green shirts, white shorts and red socks, which itself represents the Ikurriña, the flag of the Basque Country.
Certainly when the game begins at 4pm on Saturday, it will be a very proud moment not only for both clubs, but the two autonomous regions, Catalunya and the Basque Country, with their colours proudly on display. |
