FIFA give permission for Messi to be honoured if he breaks Zarra’s record at the Bernabéu

FIFA have given their permission for homage to be paid to Lionel Messi during the Clásico, should the Argentinean break Telmo Zarra’s all-time La Liga goalscoring record.
Messi took his tally to 250 league goals in Barcelona’s last game against Eibar, meaning a brace at the Bernabéu would see him clinch Telmo Zarra’s title at the weekend. Meanwhile, a FIFA spokesman has confirmed that they have their permission to pay homage to the striker, should Messi achieve the record.
“It’s an internal matter for them. The issue depends entirely on the federations of the country. There isn’t anything specific in the rules to prevent something like this happening.”
The LFP President Javier Tebas, has recently shown favourability in honouring Messi if he should break the record, stating that he “deserves to be honoured in some way”.
“Messi deserves some sort of tribute if he can break Zarra’s record – we would have to reflect on such an achievement, it’s a historical moment.”
Despite FIFA giving their permission, official accordance with the LFP and RFEF would also be needed for such an event to take place. Tebas has also previously not ruled out that the game could be stopped to honour Messi (should he achieve the record), but RFEF President Ángel María Villar has yet to show any initiative towards such actions. |
