Champions League records in Ødegaard's sights
Published: Thursday 22 January 2015, 13.15CET
Martin Ødegaard only turned 16 last month and, as UEFA.com discovers, he could potentially rewrite the UEFA Champions League record books over the next two years.
Youngest player: Céléstine Babayaro, 16 years and 87 days

Having been placed in Madrid's reserve team Real Madrid Castilla under Zinédine Zidane's tutelage, Ødegaard may struggle to put his name to this one. But if he does get the surprise call to first-team action and features against FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16, then Nigerian Babayaro's record – set for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti in 1994 – will be his.
Youngest scorer: Peter Ofori-Quaye, 17 years and 195 days

Ødegaard can take his time on this one. Accra-born Ofori-Quaye was, like the Norwegian, a first-team player at 15 and soon earned a move to a big club in Olympiacos FC in 1997. Later that year, and nine minutes after coming on for his UEFA Champions League debut against Rosenborg BK, the Ghanaian calmly fired in a consolation goal. Ødegaard has until the end of the 2016 final to carve a new mark.
Youngest Madrid player: José Rodríguez, 17 years and 354 days

Even after the 2016 final comes and goes, there are still club records up for grabs. José Rodríguez broke Raúl's record as Madrid's youngest UEFA Champions League player when he was brought on late in Madrid's 4-1 victory over AFC Ajax in December 2012. Currently on loan at RC Deportivo La Coruña, he has not figured in the competition since.
Youngest Madrid scorer: Raúl González, 18 years and 113 days

Raúl remains Madrid's youngest UEFA Champions League marksman, though. In 1995 he announced himself on the European stage with a memorable hat-trick against Ferencvárosi TC. As the video below demonstrates, it is not a bad example to follow for Ødegaard, who will eclipse Raúl's record with a goal before 9 April ... 2017. |
