Brazil 128-62 Japan
Women : Brazil breaks scoring record, ties widest victory margin 14 Aug. 2004
ATHENS, 14 August – One record fell and another was tied by the same team on the first day of the Basketball competition at the 2004 Olympic Games.
Brazil debuted on Saturday with the highest-scoring performance by any women’s basketball team to date: 128 points.
A lethal mixture of inside dominance, outside shooting and fastbreaks by the Brazilians added up to an overwhelming 128-62 victory against Japan in their Group A preliminary game at Helliniko Indoor Arena.
Those are the most points scored by any team since women’s basketball became an Olympic competition in 1976, when Japan beat Canada 121-76 in Montreal.
At the same time, Brazil tied the record for margin of victory, 66 points, matching the difference posted by the Soviet Union in a 119-53 victory over Italy in 1980 at Moscow. |
