Michael Phelps has announced that he will not swim in the finals of the 400m medley relay on Saturday. He has decided to give the honors of swimming the butterfly leg to teammate and world record-holder Ian Crocker, who finished just four-hundredths of a second behind Phelps in the 100m fly.
“For me, giving that up is tough, it really is,” Phelps said. “But Ian is one of the greater relay swimmers on the U.S. team. He wasn’t feeling too well in the 400m freestyle relay, but I’m willing to give him a chance and step up tomorrow night and hopefully we can win this relay.”
If the relay should medal in Saturday's finals, Phelps will also receive a medal by virtue of his participation in Friday morning’s relay preliminaries, in which he swam the butterfly leg for the top-seeded American team.
“We talked about it after the (100m butterfly),” Phelps said. “This is a decision that I chose and that I thought was the best decision, and that’s why we went with it. We came into this meet as a team, and we’re going to leave it as a team.”
Phelps has won seven medals so far, one short of the all-time Olympic record for medals won by an individual at a single Olympic Games. Gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin of the Soviet Union won eight at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
“Bob (Bowman) and Michael and I talked about the medley relay, and this kind of had to come from Michael,” U.S. coach Eddie Reese said. “Since the race was so close at four-hundredths of a second, and Ian’s relay take-off is so much better than Michael’s, at least as it appears in most relays, Ian is going to (swim the) fly in the medley relay tomorrow evening.
“It’s a hell of a gesture, and it’s correct, but it’s a hell of a gesture. And it had to come from him.”
Phelps is a little relieved to sit back and relax a bit.
“When tomorrow’s finals come, I will be in the stands, and I will be cheering as hard as I can for the U.S. team,” Phelps said. “We have one more day of competing.”
