REVIEW: OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE 5 - DEPORTIVO 1 (INTERTOTO)
Wednesday 24th August, 2005 -- Deportivo presented another poor performance in Europe. It was the game No. 100 for the Galicians participating in European competitions, but they couldn't celebrate in a proper way. Depor had the control over the situation at half-time, but a terrible second half caused the failure to achieve the final ticket to the UEFA cup.
BEFORE TO THE MATCH
Coach Caparrs had the absences of Sergio, Vctor and Luque has his main worries. For this reason he decided to present two changes in the lineup. First, He sent Lionel Scaloni to midfield in order to partnership with Duscher in the pivote functions. The other modification was the presence of De Guzmn as right winger. Meanwhile, Marseille had the absences of Frdric Dhu (injured), Andre Luis (not inscribed), Leyti N'Diaye, Fabian Barthez (suspended) and Demetrius Ferreira (suspended).
FIRST HALF
Marseille started the game with an offensive mentality, they knew that the key was to score a quick goal in order to put some pressure to the Galicians. And they did it. At minute 4th Ribery scored the goal after a free kicked by Taiwo. The shot couldn't be contained by Molina and the ball rebounded in his chest; Ribery was there in order to sent the ball to the back of the net.
But Deportivo reacted well, just four minutes later Andrade scored the equalizer taking advantage of the errors in the defensive line of Marseille. The situation in the pitch started to be complicated when Ribery made a late challenge against Duscher. The Argentinean midfielder reacted badly and a fight begun. As consequence both men were sent off by referee Ivanov.
The bad feelings between both squads continued in the pitch and Ivanov had to show four more yellow cards in the first half. The French club had the possession of the ball and they tried to create more danger to Depor. Their only clear chance after the goal was a headed ball of Niang, but his intent was wide. After the end of the first half the fight continued in the road to the dressing rooms.
SECOND HALF
The last 45 minutes started with a yellow card for De Guzmn. Marseille was decided to reach the miracle and they constantly created troubles to the Galicians. Meit, Taiwo and Niang had chances but they couldn't score the second goal. Finally, they reached the objective with a headed ball of Meit that ended in Depor's net. The situation became worse for Deportivo as Joan Capdevila was sent off the match for a second yellow card. The Galicians would have to defend the narrow advantage with nine men.
Three minutes later Niang scored the third goal for Marseille. Molina couldn't intercept the French striker and he approached the dream for the home side. Caparrs tried to react replacing Tristn with Enrique Romero but the situation became worse. Two minutes before to the end Niang scored the wining goal for his team. He pounces on a scramble in the Depor box and slots home past Molina.
Depor was broken and Oruma scored the fifth in a solo effort during the additional time.
AFTER THE MATCH
Like last season the defensive mistakes and the poor control of the ball in midfield created a huge disappointment for Depor. A 2-0 advantage was converted into a 3-5 defeat. Some people appoints to the poor performace of the referee, bu the reality at the end is that Olympique Marseille fought harder and now they will join Lens and Hamburger SV in the UEFA cup as Intertoto champions.

He showed yellow card to Lamouchi (15'), Nakata (32'), Meit (82'), Niang (87'), Scaloni (15'), Capdevila (23'), Juanma (39'), De Guzmn (48'), Manuel Pablo (60') and Acuña (87'). Ribery and Duscher saw a direct red card (12'), Capdevila was sent off for accumulation of two yellow cards (71').
