Hats off to Hammarby
Thursday, 3 August 2006

from Gothenberg
Following a two-week FIFA World Cup break, the Swedish Allsvenskan is back in action with Hammarby and IF Elfsborg leading the way.
Ins and outs
Pacesetters Hammarby have sold star striker Björn Runström to English Premiership side Fulham FC but Brazilian Paulinho Guará is impressing in his former team-mate's absence and tops the goalscoring charts with seven so far this season. However, Hammarby's most dramatic result of recent weeks was a 3-0 defeat at second-placed Elfsborg, for whom midfielder Anders Svensson and youngster Samuel Holmén are catching the eye. Should Magnus Haglund's men continue their solid stride they might just win their first title since 1961.

AIK challenge
It is far from a two-horse race, though, with promoted Stockholm club AIK Solna, boasting a strike force of Brazilian Daniel Mendes and Slovenian Miran Burgič, just a point adrift of Elfsborg. Big-spending Malmö FF - buoyed by the signings of Jonatan Johansson from Charlton Athletic FC, Junior from Odense BK and Gabriel from Fortaleza EC - are a further point in arrears.

Djurgården distractions
Just behind Malmö, title-holders Djurgårdens IF FF are struggling for consistency, their UEFA Champions League challenge proving something of a distraction. A goal for Brazilian new boy Enrico on his European debut against MFK Ružomberok augured well, but Djurgården nonetheless bowed out to the Slovakian champions this week.

IFK misery
IFK Göteborg's European campaign also ended unhappily with defeat by Irish representatives Derry City FC in the UEFA Cup, and they have lost Karl Svensson to Rangers FC and Oscar Wendt to FC København. They are hoping the arrivals of Uruguayan international Alejandro Lago on loan from Rosenborg BK and, potentially, Argentinian full-back José Shaffer can lift spirits. Meanwhile, Henrik Larsson's high-profile return to Swedish football has yet to inspire an upsurge in Helsingborgs IF's fortunes, with the club slipping into mid-table along with Gefle IF, who succumbed to Welsh part-timers Llanelli FC in their UEFA Cup opener.

Basement dwellers
Elsewhere, promoted GAIS Göteborg, led by former Swedish international Roland Nilsson, are defying predictions by staying out of the relegation zone, where Östers IF and Örgryte IS are already foundering. Örgryte have yet to win this term, but have drawn twice since Sören Börjesson replaced Zoran Lukic as coach.
