No happy returns for Mellberg as he and two others thrown out of Swedish squad

Swedish veteran defender Olof Mellberg's 29th birthday celebrations turned sour when he and Swedish team-mates Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Wilhelmsson were expelled from their Euro 2008 squad for Wednesday's qualifier with Liechtenstein.

Swedish coach Lars Lagerbäck said it had been the most annoying decision of his long career having to punish his star trio for breaking the curfew and going out after a team meeting.

"The decision I took is the most irritating I have had to take in my career not only as national coach but as a coach," he said.

The team management explained that on Sunday after the players had had the afternoon and evening off they were summonsed for a team meeting but that the trio had left the hotel against orders and had not returned until the early morning, though, according to some reports they did not drink alcohol.

"The team management believe that they broke their word and it was subsequently decided that the three should leave the team hotel in Gothenburg immediately," said a statement from the management.

Mellberg's agent released a statement saying his client apologised for not having respected the curfew.

Sweden, who disappointed at the World Cup finals crashing out tamely 3-0 to Germany in the second round, won their opening qualifier on Saturday beating Latvia 1-0 in Riga.

Sweden should still be able to cope without Mellberg, who is a two-time World Cup finals veteran and a stalwart of the Aston Villa defence, Inter Milan star Ibrahimovic and Wilhelmsson against minnows Liechtenstein.

Rommedahl runs Iceland ragged

Dennis Rommedahl was in inspired form, scoring one and setting up the other as Denmark eased to a 2-0 victory against Iceland to get their UEFA EURO 2008™ Group F campaign off to a winning start.

Dream start
Iceland went into the game on the back of a morale-boosting 3-0 victory in Northern Ireland on Saturday but were soon brought down to earth in Reykjavik. Rommedahl was the architect of many of their problems, with the winger giving the Danes a dream start with the opener on five minutes, latching on to Christian Poulsen's pinpoint pass and striding clear of the Iceland back line before slotting past Árni Arason in the home goal.

Sørensen saves
Arason did well to keep out Thomas Kahlenberg's fierce drive from distance soon after but was again helpless when Jon Dahl Tomasson tucked in Rommedahl's teasing low cross just after the half-hour. Despite Eidur Gudjohnsen's constant probing, Iceland offered few signs of working a way back into the match which descended into a fractious affair, although Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson did force Thomas Sørensen into a point-blank save. The keeper also reacted well to keep out Gudjohnsen's clever free-kick midway through the second half as Morten Olsen's side eased to victory.

Ten-man Portugal held on for a point in Helsinki as they came from behind to force a draw against Finland in their UEFA EURO 2008™ Group A qualifier.

Finland press
Finland had a dream start against the 2006 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists, dominating for much of the first half, with Sami Hyypiä heading just wide from a corner by Jari Litmanen early on. The Liverpool FC centre-back did hit the target 60 seconds later, however, forcing an impressive save from Ricardo in Portugal's goal.

Kolkka opener
Finnish pressure soon told when Jonatan Johansson received a pass from Joonas Kolkka on 22 minutes and fired beyond Ricardo. Portugal responded well, with Cristiano Ronaldo going close with two shots in quick succession and though Finland, who beat Poland on Saturday, still had the upper hand, the visitors equalised just before the break as Deco's pass found Nuno Gomes, who finished clinically.

Portugal punished
Portugal rallied after half-time, with Ronaldo and Deco causing problems for Finland, but any hopes the visitors had of picking up three points were dealt a significant blow eight minutes after the restart when Ricardo Costa collected a second yellow card. The hosts looked to capitalise and began pressing, with Johansson demanding another great stop from Ricardo on the hour. Portugal threatened briefly on the counterattack, but were vulnerable at the back and Litmanen was unlucky not to find the target from a free-kick as Finland had to settle for a draw.

Norway continue winning beginning

Norway continued their strong start to UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying as second-half strikes from Fredrik Strømstad and Steffen Iversen ended the resistance of a resilient ten-man Moldova in Oslo.

Opening victory
The Norwegians had opened their Group C campaign in impressive fashion with a 4-1 victory in Hungary on Saturday, but a well-drilled Moldova side proved an entirely different proposition at the Ullevål stadium despite losing striker Victor Berco to a red card shortly after half-time. The visitors nevertheless looked set to hold out for what would have been an impressive point only for Strømstad and Iversen to break through in the last 20 minutes.

Red card
Norway coach Åge Hareide made one change to the starting lineup that had overwhelmed the Hungarians, Ole Gunnar Solskjær – who scored twice in Budapest – making way for Frode Johnsen, while the visitors kept faith with the team who only lost to reigning champions Greece due to a late goal in their opening fixture. Perhaps unsurprisingly the hosts were in lively mood early on, with Morten Gamst Pedersen posing problems down the left in the first 15 minutes. Strømstad then drilled a 20-metre shot against the Moldova crossbar with goalkeeper Sergei Pascenco beaten, but some organised defending ensured the scoresheet remained blank at the interval.

Late efforts
The balance of play changed abruptly less than a minute into the second half, however, as Berco was dismissed for violent conduct yet Moldova kept the Norwegians at bay until the 73rd minute when John Carew's inswinging corner from the right found Strømstad in space and the midfielder headed into the top corner. Substitute Iversen put the result beyond doubt six minutes later with an effort from distance, giving his side maximum points from their first two matches ahead of the trip to Greece on 7 October. Moldova, having won considerable credit but no points from their opening games, welcome Bosnia-Herzegovina the same day.

Hällregn, ett överraskande mål bakåt, och en straff i ribban. Men 3-1 mot Liechenstein gav framför allt tre viktiga poäng i banken inför det fortsatta EM-kvalet.
- Hade vi gjort mål på våra chanser idag hade vi vunnit ganska klart, summerade lagkapten Fredrik Ljungberg i TV3 efter matchen.

Det tog 48 sekunder för Sverige att slå hål på Liechensteins låga och beslutsamma försvar. Johan Elmander drev upp bollen och slog ett inlägg, som studsade mot en back ut till Marcus Allbäck som klippte till på volley. Allbäcks 25:e landslagsmål hör till hans vackraste, en perfekt båge upp i målvaktens högra kryss.

Sedan fortsatte Sverige pressa, spelade kvickt och rakt fram till avslutssektorn. Men trots tidig utdelning blev det inte mer resultat.
- Det började nästan för bra, vi kunde gjort 2-0 och 3-0, men så blev det inte. Istället blir det det klassiska att dom får 1-1, sade målskytten Allbäck till TV3 efter matchen.

Kvittering var varken logisk eller väntad. Mitt i stabilt svenskt spel, så sög Liechtenteins stjärna Mario Frick in bollen i mittcirkeln och avancerade 40 meter på egen hand. På vägen trasslade han sig förbi både Teddy Lucic och Petter Hansson, och vinklade sedan in bollen bakom Rami Shaaban.

Chocken satte baklås på det svenska spelet, och första halvlek krampade mer eller mindre ihop.
- Vi nådde inte upp till den standard vi skulle. Vi spelade omständligt, vi spelade framför istället för att utmana. Vi var för långsamma, och flyttade boll framför deras mittfält, sade assisterande förbundskapten Roland Andersson till TV3.

Efter ett par förlorade möjligheter framför mål blev det ändå Marcus Allbäck som visade vägen till trepoängaren. 25 minuter in i andra halvlek bröt han dödläget genom ett patenterat Allbäck-mål - ryck i djupled, mottagning och avslut i en rörelse.

I slutminuterna fälldes inhopparen Markus Rosenberg i straffområdet. I det dåliga vädret lade Fredrik Ljungberg straffen på säkerhet i mitten av målet, men träffade ribban. Returen gick rakt ut till Rosenberg som nickade i mål. 3-1, och slut på eventuell ängslan på åskådarplats.

Nästa punkt på EM-kvalprogrammet är Spanien på Råsunda den sjunde oktober.

Thomas Kahlenberg

丹麥無疑是08年歐錦賽會外賽裡，北歐最值得期待的一支，他們今年拔擢幾位U-21
好手邁向成年隊，這個國家在21世紀時發現青訓落後給鄰居，才開始努力的進行
「復育」計畫，現在已經開花結果了，而 Kahlenberg 就是這世代的佼佼者，他
早被認可踢上國家隊先發，直到最近教練歐森才實現眾人的期待。


往回看一下去年...


2005年是 AJ Auxerre 創立一百週年，這一年對他們來說相當多采多姿，首先是
球團的教父級人物 Guy Roux宣布離開，接著是名帥（至少在這個Blog裡還不算...哈）
Santini的入主，聯賽開始遭遇重挫以0比7敗給Lens，讓老門將 Cool 一週都睡
不好，05/06一開始Auxerre是話題裡被取笑對象，但過了一個月之後
，這支近代法甲勁旅開始回穩，取代他們悲慘的是 PSG的守成不力。成績回到前幾
，重點是教練抓住了進攻節奏，也改善了後防。


其實Auxerre 前線人才濟濟，扣除先前賣掉的Benjani之外， Akale盤球功夫甚優
，能給對手相當威脅，反而進球數字漂亮的 Luyindula貢獻不大，他是個會入球
的前鋒，但最大關鍵還是前帥Santini重新重用Pieroni（一開始棄用）跟丹麥人的
崛起。


丹麥人 Kahlenberg 的作用之大，連筆者一開始都無法預期，畢竟前年聯繫前線
跟中場的是大Kalou（弟弟在Feyenoord的），他在去年轉會去了PSG，這對球隊
的影響巨大，只是沒有人預期05/06新買入的丹麥球員能夠扛下重擔。


在北歐 Kahlenberg跟 Kim Kallstrom 都是成名甚早的青年好手，如果說
Kim的優異左腳讓他晉身國際足壇，那 Thomas Kahlenberg注定是丹麥這個世代
的第一；他的控球、視野都很優秀，在丹麥傳奇勞德魯普兄弟後，中場創造力
相當不足，這幾年的 Jorgensen & Rommedahl都只在邊路威脅較大，中場的
Gravesen跟Poulsen進攻傳輸的慧根不足，畢竟這兩人是防守專用，這也造成
丹麥進攻逐漸死板起來，從世界盃會外賽被淘汰，看得出他們問題不小。



4年前丹麥有讓人羨慕的鋒線組合，但這幾年沒有出什麼人才，反而是四年前比較
缺少光芒的鄰居-瑞典人才輩出，但在 Kahlenberg崛起後，中路的指揮塔角色多了
一個可用之兵。Brondby IF當年發現了他以後驚為天人，認為他是丹麥近年來最
有資質的新秀；比較起成名早一點的 Rommedahl等人，他在盤球、速度上都顯得平
凡無奇，可是頭腦清楚、並且不慌不亂，這就是他最大的價值-擁有一身技術下，
還能夠冷靜的面對危機...



2004年歐錦賽丹麥在最後時刻徵召他入隊，讓他跟新銳前鋒 Lovenkrands一起
感受國際大賽的感覺，這兩人都是丹麥前鋒線上的未來，前者跟當時的Zlatan
一樣需要被琢磨，而 Kahlenberg 則是需要被重用，幸運的是寄出邀請
信的是 Auxerre，是一支成績、名氣都在法甲前幾名的好球隊，基本上這支球隊
跟綠衫軍 Saint-Etienne都是年輕人的天堂，在他入隊報到後 前帥Santini
甚至把代表王牌的10號球衣給他穿，對他之器重可見一斑（老桑唯一沒做錯的？！）
，而 Thomas 也沒有辜負期待，目前為止用「中規中矩」形容都嫌小氣，該說
成了隊裡的「中流砥柱」



我喜歡 Kahlenberg踢球的神情，他是 Auxerre上季的英雄，傳球輸送的功夫很
值得讚賞，給了這支球隊不同以往的思維，丹麥人腳下動作從不華麗，但總能夠傳
出適當的球，這就是一個好球員的證明；往左線走他的威力顯得更強些，可是要想
在國家隊得到更多重用，建議他可以在右路多「搞」一點破壞，除了練就更全面的
侵略功夫外，畢竟俱樂部有實在太多左路好手了！

"We respect them but we are not afraid of them." That is the defiant message from FC København coach Ståle Solbakken as the Danish champions prepare to host SL Benfica in their opening Group F fixture at the Parken Stadium on Wednesday night.

Solbakken optimism
It is the first time that København have made it to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and having caused an upset by claiming the scalp of AFC Ajax in the third qualifying round, Solbakken feels his side are capable of creating another shock by overcoming last season's quarter-finalists. "I am quite confident about getting a result," said the Norwegian. "The reason I say that is not how I rate Benfica but how I rate my own players and my own team. I know that on our day we can take points off anyone and that includes Benfica."

Striking reshuffle
København will be without the suspended Marcus Allbäck meaning that Jesper Grønkjær is likely to support Fredrik Berglund in attack, while goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen has declared himself fit after shaking off a back injury sustained in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Esbjerg fB. The Superligaen outfit have also been boosted by the news that Benfica playmaker Rui Costa will be missing because of a thigh strain and with a capacity 40,000 crowd behind them in their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign, Solbakken is predicting an uncomfortable evening for the visitors.

Learning curve
"I don't think they are looking forward to this game," Solbakken added. "Mentally, this match will be tougher for them than for us. The pressure is all on Benfica and that will also play on the minds of their players. It is a 50-50 game and I don't think there will be too many chances." The 38-year-old, who was forced to give up his playing career in 2001 after suffering a heart attack at København's training ground, has made quite an impression since taking over as coach earlier this year. Despite all the fighting talk Solbakken is realistic about what his charges can achieve in Europe's élite tournament. He said: "It is a great achievement for a club such as ours to reach the group stage. Now we have six games to learn more and improve the quality of this group of players."

Visitors target victory
His counterpart Fernando Santos is attempting to make light of Rui Costa's absence but admits it is vital for the Eagles to get off to a winning start following their 3-0 defeat at Boavista FC in their curtain-raising league fixture at the weekend. "It is very important to start with a victory," said the coach. "The first game is always the most important. We have come here to get a win but we know the difficulties we will face against København." Winger Simão should start although not fully fit and he is determined to return to Lisbon with three points. "Beating Ajax was an impressive achievement and we know we are facing a good side," the Portuguese international said. "I am still not 100 per cent fit but I am capable of helping the team and we will do everything to win."

SL Benfica captain Simão declared himself satisfied with both his performance and that of his team as he returned to action to help the Lisbon giants to a goalless draw in their first Group F fixture away to FC København.

'Important point'
"I haven't played for the best part of a month, so I am delighted to be back," the 26-year-old told uefa.com. "We had opportunities to take all three points but couldn't do so, although it's important to take something from your first match so we are satisfied with the point." The game was uncharted territory for the Portuguese outfit, who had never faced København before, but they will return to more familiar ground on Matchday 2 when they take on Manchester United FC at the Estádio da Luz on 26 September.

United test
The sides met in the group stage last season, with Benfica losing 2-1 at Old Trafford before reversing the scoreline on Matchday 6 to seal progress to the knockout stage as the English club crashed out. "It's always difficult to play against United but we are going to prepare thoroughly and aim to match last season's result," Simão continued. "We still have a few weeks to prepare for that game and we will certainly be stronger by then, you can be sure of that."

Everton angle
København play Celtic FC on the same night, a tie which could see another reunion of sorts with their skipper Tobias Linderoth likely to encounter his former Everton FC team-mate Thomas Gravesen in Glasgow. "We have a good chance against Celtic," he said. "We know they're a good team but we showed tonight that we are quite sound defensively and if we can create a couple of chances we could get a result."

Creative dearth
Although the Danish champions will travel to Scotland with the cushion of a point, Linderoth allowed himself to wish for the luxury of three. "We are not 100 per cent happy with the point but we didn't create many chances so we can't complain too much," the 27-year-old told uefa.com. "We defended well but we simply needed to create more chances."
