Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has revealed his sympathy for Hernan Crespo after the rossoneri opted to sign Christian Vieri instead.
The San Siro giants tried all summer to take the Argentinian from Chelsea, but in the end a deal could not be reached.
"It is true that on Hernan’s marriage, on May 16, I promised that I would do my best to keep him," Galliani was quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport. "I also really wanted him to stay. That’s why we agreed to sign a mandate expiring on June 30 with his agent.
"Then, unfortunately, the negotiation with Chelsea had some difficulties and things were dragged out. It was not my own fault. The transfer market has strict rules, you can’t lose time. And Chelsea have no intention to let Crespo go.
"That’s why we waited for the outcome of the meeting between Hidalgo and Kenyon. Unfortunately, it didn’t come to a conclusion. So we decided to move quickly for Vieri. I’m sorry for Hernan but we couldn’t risk to waste more precious time. And if anyone else had moved in for Vieri? We could not run this risk."
Crespo himself added: "My sensations were right: ten days ago I said that the optimism was fading away, that time was passing and I was realising that it would be very difficult to remain at Milan.
"I’m happy for Vieri. Bobo has been a close friend of mine since we played together at Inter. I’m happy he had his dream come true, I sincerely wish him to score plenty of goals because he is a great striker and an extraordinary man.
"As for my future, my agent Hidalgo has not called me yet to inform about my destination, so I stay here and have some rest with my family and recharge batteries. I’m waiting."
It seems certain that Crespo will play the new season with Chelsea.

Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo’s hopes of remaining with Milan next season are over, says his agent.
"Hernan will play with Chelsea and he wants to have as good a season as he had at Milan," Fernando Hidalgo told the Daily Mail.
The Argentina international spent last term on loan at the San Siro and was keen to remain with the Rossoneri.
A deal with Chelsea had been agreed in principal, to extend his loan for another 12 months, but talks stalled after the London club failed to bring in a new striker.
Milan already seem to have replaced Crespo, 29, in their squad by netting Christian Vieri on a free transfer yesterday.
The Italian giants are also still interested in signing Alberto Gilardino from Parma which will complete their attacking options for the new term.
Crespo, who signed for Chelsea in 2003 for £16.8m, was a success last term and his failure to stay at Milan will be a big blow.
"I'm having the worst summer of my life because I don't know at what club I will be at in two weeks time," he said recently.
"Since losing the Champions’ League Final the only good thing that has happened has been my wedding."
Crespo was linked with a move to Juventus recently, as part of a deal that may see David Trezeguet move to Stamford Bridge.
