Milan ready to up Cole ante
Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric is expected to begin talks with his Chelsea counterparts with regards to a move for Carlton Cole.
The England Under-21 hit-man is wanted by the South Coast outfit to replace Yakubu Aiyegbeni - with a £2 million bid thought to be enough to secure his services.
Mandaric is confident his new coach Alain Perrin can mould Cole's raw potential into a finished article and it is expected that he will up his pursuit of the powerful striker in the next few weeks.
Cole, 21-years-old, spent last season on-loan at Aston Villa to mixed success, in a campaign that ultimately yielded just three goals in 29 appearances.
Nevertheless, Portsmouth - amongst others - remain his primary suitors and in Mandaric have a supremo desperate to land his man.
''He is a good young player, an England Under-21 international, who is moving in the right direction,'' said Mandaric.
''I believe with the right coaching, which we have at this club, he can learn and improve.''
Mandaric is also hopeful of landing Cole's Chelsea team-mate Alexei Smertin, who enjoyed an excellent campaign on-loan at Fratton Park the season before last.
