Barcelona will only renew Demetrio Albertini's contract if he cannot find a club to stop him from retiring from football.
The Italian midfielder has been told that his chances at Camp Nou will be extremely limited next term and have advised that he begin looking for a new club.
Albertini, who celebrates his 34th birthday in August, joined Barça on a six-month contract in January and his deal ran out at the end of June.
The Catalan club's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, admitted that Albertini is now surplus to requirements and is hopeful that he will receive an offer before the start of the new season.
"We have informed the player that he would be better off looking for a new team," Txiki said.
But Albertini has stated that he may retire if no interest surfaces and Barcelona are keen not to see that happen.
Frank Rijkaard has mooted the idea of offering his former Milan team-mate a reduced deal to stop him from retiring. |
