Spurs enter Baptista battle

Tottenham appear to have entered the race to sign Julio Baptista after Sevilla today claimed they have received a bid of more than £13.8m for the forward.
Baptista, the 23-year-old Brazil international, has been linked with a move to Arsenal but Sevilla revealed Spurs have tabled the most expensive bid for the player, who is under contract at the club until 2006.

"The most important offer that we have received is that of Tottenham, of more than 20m euros," said a club statement.

It is not known whether Sevilla will accept this bid, but club president Jose Maria Del Nido has warned Baptista's admirers time is running out.
"It's going to be difficult for him to leave," he said. "Time is passing by and there are fewer days in order for clubs to make higher offers than what we have received so far."

Baptista struck 20 goals in 30 league appearances last season as Sevilla finished sixth in the standings.
