Arsenal monitor Dacourt, Reds in new Spanish

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could turn to Olivier Dacourt as he seeks a replacement for Patrick Vieira.

The Roma midfielder is well known to the Gunners chief and already has Premiership experience from spells with Everton and Leeds United.

Although he is under contract until 2006, it is believed that Arsenal have already made their intentions clear and are exploring the possibility of landing the France international.

Wenger, always shrewd in the transfer market, is aware that he might even be able to push Roma into releasing Dacourt on a free transfer due to their financial problems as the Serie A outfit may want to get him off their wage bill.

Indeed, Roma strongly considered approaches from Bolton Wanderers and Fulham recently, only for the player to refuse the opportunity to take up those options.

Other clubs are monitoring Dacourt's situation, possibly even Barcelona, but the chance to play at Highbury would be an enticing one for the 31-year-old.

He would be an ideal no-risk replacement for Vieira, who signed for Juventus recently.

One potential stumbling block is the transfer embargo currently imposed on Roma but the Stadio Olimpico outfit are hopeful of getting the ban overturned.

Wenger is continuing to run the rule over trialists Philippe Christanval and Alexandre Song but will wait until the end of the pre-season tour of Austria before making a decision on the pair.

Reports in Spain claim that Liverpool have submitted an offer for Sevilla's Brazilian defender Daniel Alves.

AS insist The Reds have bid around €10 million for the 22-year-old full-back who can also operate wide on the right of midfield.

Alves joined Sevilla in January of 2003 from Bahia in his native Brazil and has established himself as an important performer at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan over the past couple of seasons.

His displays have reportedly attracted the interest of Real Madrid and Juventus, but Sevilla have not been interesting in selling.

However, it seems that scenario might have changed following the news that Alves' compatriot Julio Baptista has decided to stay at the club.

The striker had seemed on the verge of joining Arsenal which would have meant Sevilla's quota of non-EU players being reduced to three.

They currently have four on their books, (Baptista, Alves, Adriano Correia and Luis Fabiano), but will only be able to play three when the season kicks off. 賣 Baptista 好過 la

Alves is looking to gain Spanish citizenship and is hoping to have his request granted over the next few weeks which would also resolve the situation.

However, Sevilla could decide to cash in on the player rather than risk having to leave one of their Brazilian stars on the sidelines if the application fails.

AS claim Liverpool's €10 million offer has been rebuffed, but an improved bid could force the Primera outfit into a rethink.

Liverpool's bid to land Real Zaragoza defender Gabriel Milito looks ever more complicated with the Spanish outfit adamant he will be staying put.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is keen to bring the 24-year-old centre back to Anfield to add extra competition to his rearguard.

The Argentine has enjoyed two very impressive seasons at La Romareda and revealed last week that he was keen to seal a switch to the reigning European champions who have submitted an £8 million offer for his services.

Zaragoza are, though, determined to hold on to Milito, and his Argentina international team-mate Luciano Galletti who has been linked with both Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, having already sold one of their top players, striker David Villa, to Valencia earlier in the summer.

The Aragon-based outfit have offered Milito a new contract thought to match the wages on offer from Liverpool in a bid to safeguard his future with his current deal due to expire in two seasons.

Zaragoza chief executive Jeronimo Suarez believes the stopper is almost certain to stay despite the persistent interest from Anfield.

"It's practically impossible that Milito will go," he stated.

"Our interest is to keep him and for that reason he has a very good offer from the club to extend and improve his contract."

Manager Victor Munoz echoed Suarez's sentiments, adding: "I am convinced that the two players (Milito and Galletti) will be with us this season."

If he is ultimately unsuccessful in his attempts to prise Milito from Zaragoza, Benitez is being tipped to stay in Spain in his pursuit of a new defender with Real Madrid's Walter Samuel and Deportivo La Coruna's Jorge Andrade reportedly on his wish-list.
