Portsmouth have agreed terms with former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld.

The Dutchman, who left Anfield four years ago, is a free agent after spending last season with Real Mallorca.

The 30-year-old effectively takes the place of Shaka Hislop, who was released by Pompey at the end of last season.

Chief executive Peter Storrie said: 'Sander has bags of experience, not least in the Premier League and this afternoon we have agreed terms with him.

'We want competition in all areas and the goalkeeping berth is no different. This will be a welcome addition to our squad.'

Westerveld, who joined Liverpool in 1999, won a cup treble with the club in 2001 but left early the following season after the twin signings of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland.

He spent three years with Real Sociedad before moving on to Mallorca last summer.

News of Westerveld's impending arrival comes soon after the club completed the signing of Norwegian striker Azar Karadas on a year-long loan.

The 23-year-old joins Alain Perrin's multi-national squad from Benfica and the club have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

Karadas has won three Norway caps and had spells with SK Brann and Rosenborg before joining Benfica.

Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric said: 'We have strengthened our strike force with Azar's signing and this will give us further options.

'Alain Perrin rates him highly and he is a very good addition to Pompey's squad.'

Karadas joins French pair Laurent Robert and Gregory Vignal, Republic of Ireland defender Andy O'Brien and Colombia midfielder John Viafara among the club's summer signings.

Portsmouth sold striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu to Middlesbrough for £7.5million and Mandaric now hopes Karadas will give them a presence in attack similar to the Nigerian.

'He is an excellent English-style targetman and his goals and style attracted a club such as Benfica to go out and purchase him,' added Mandaric.

Henchoz signs 12-month Wigan deal  

Former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has signed a 12-month deal at newly-promoted Wigan.
The 30-year-old Swiss defender has impressed on trial and is Wigan's fourth summer signing.

Henchoz also played for Blackburn and made more than 200 appearances for Liverpool after joining in 1999.

He said: "I know I won't win as many games as I did at Liverpool, but it is another challenge for me and the aim is to stay up with Wigan."

Wigan boss Paul Jewell said: "He's still fairly young at 30, but the main thing is he has a lot of experience and that can help us.

"I didn't want to bring in players for the wrong reasons. Stephane showed real commitment.

"He jumped on a plane to join us at our training base in Denmark and I was impressed by that."

Henchoz signed for Celtic on loan last season but made only two starts and has taken the chance to return to the Premiership with Wigan.

Wigan have also signed Rotherham goalkeeper Mike Pollitt and defenders Pascal Chimbonda and Ryan Taylor from Bastia and Tranmere respectively.
