ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger is closing in on the ￡18million signing of Julio Baptista from Seville.

The Brazilian midfielder’s club president Jose Maria Del Nido admitted:“As yet, nothing has been agreed between the two clubs but I can reveal that Arsenal are now willing to offer something close to the amount that we could accept.

“They have now offered more than double the ￡8.3m they began the bidding with and will exceed ￡17m — but the agreement must suit all three parties.”

He met Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein last week and now favours a move to the Gunners rather than Barcelona.
