PREVIEW: NEWCASTLE - DEPORTIVO (INTERTOTO 20h45)
Wednesday 3rd August, 2005 -- Coach Caparrós has decided that the best strategy is to use a 'triple pivote' in midfield, a formation that was used by Irureta in the past; meanwhile, Newcastle could use some of the players absent at Riazor like Jermaine Jenas, Shola Ameobi, Emre and Scott Parker.
DEPORTIVO: SCALONI, DUSCHER AND SERGIO
Caparrós knows that the advantage in the aggregate score is minimal, for this reason he's planning a lineup with the intention of controlling the traffic in midfield. Once again, the defence will be the only sector without changes. Francisco Molina continues as the goalkeeper, but this time he will have Dani Mallo as his backup in the bench.
The central defenders will be Enrique Romero and Jorge Andrade. Coloccini is still injured and the future of César seems to be near to Villarreal. Sportpaper AS wrote yesterday that the Valencian club is negotiating his incorporation in an operation valued at €2.5 million. Meanwhile, Juanma will be waiting on the bench. The defensive line is complete with Manuel Pablo on the right side and Joan Capdevila on the left.
Midfield is the sector with more changes. Caparrós will use three players in order to control the offensive efforts of Newcastle. Aldo Duscher, Sergio and Lionel Scaloni will compose this defensive line. Pedro Munitis will play in the left wing changing from the right spot that he occupied in the previous match at Riazor.
Diego Tristán and Rúben Castro will be the offensive duo of Deportivo. It's expected that Sergio will have a double function trying to control the game in midfield and helping in the right wing in order to support along with Munitis the work of the offensive couple. Valerón, Víctor, Luque and De Guzmán will start the game on the bench waiting for the call of Caparrós.
Manuel Pablo talked before the match and he said that the key for the qualification is to control the ball and to present and offensive mentality: "I believe that this time they will try to attack us with more intensity; however, the coach already told us that we must attack them in any occasion possible once we get the ball. In fact, we will try to create a lot of pressure in their area in order to prevent their offensive game."
NEWCASTLE: JENAS, EMRE, PARKER AND AMEOBI
Coach Graeme Souness will try to bounce back from the 1-2 defeat at Riazor, for this reason he's planning an offensive lineup based on the return of Jermaine Jenas. He missed the trip to Spain last week with a hamstring injury. The debut of Emre and Scott Parker is also expected; however Souness isn't sure about their presence in the starting lineup as he said: "Scott Parker and Emre will play some part in the game, whether or not I start them or bring them off the bench remains to be seen, but they are both ready to play and they will give us a boost. We were short on numbers last week in the first leg, but Scott and Emre came into contention and Jermaine Jenas could possibly be involved. We need as many experienced players as we can get, because Deportivo have a team packed with international players. They are all at a good age as well, in their late 20’s, and have plenty of experience."
Meanwhile, there is no place in the squad for Celestine Babayaro. The Nigerian international has a thigh strain and he will miss the clash, Elliott will cover his position. The surprise in the list of called players is the presence of Shola Ameobi, but it isn't expected his participation in the starting lineup since he's returning from a complicated injury.
