Mick McCarthy admits Sunderland's Championship title-clinching win at West Ham in April seems a million miles away.
The Black Cats beat the Hammers 2-1 at Upton Park in April to secure their passage into the Premiership.
At that point West Ham looked set to miss out on the play-offs and their boss Alan Pardew was under immense pressure.
What a difference 10 months makes!
West Ham sneaked into the play-offs, went up and have taken the Premiership by storm.
Sunderland on the other hand have struggled this season and they head to Upton Park on Saturday 26 points behind the Londoners.
McCarthy, who describes the night at West Ham as one of his greatest triumphs, said: "Last time we were at West Ham was a great night - one of the best in a lot of people's careers, mine included.
"It is one of those memories that will always be there, but at the moment it seems a long, long time ago.
"I'm sure there will be one or two of their players who will remember us winning the Championship at Upton Park and they will want a little bit of revenge.
"West Ham are doing brilliantly this season and they had a fantastic result against Arsenal this week. It's amazing how quickly things can change.
"But, again, it might be one of those games where they are a bit more nervous of playing against us than we are of going down there.
"We know the scenario of us staying up is becoming increasingly unlikely as each game goes by without us picking up points.
"But we have to keep on going, individually and collectively. We have to keep on trying to win games and get better performances."
Sunderland head to London on the back of two poor results. By contrast, West Ham go into it having beaten Arsenal 3-2 at Highbury.
But, despite the situation, McCarthy is refusing to throw in the towel and he will keep fighting in a bid to turn around the club's fortunes.
"We'll all stick together and have a right go," he said. "We've put in some good performances this season and we've got to do it again.
"We know that scenario of staying up becomes increasingly unlikely, because games are going and we're losing points; but at the end of it you have to keep going and that's what I keep saying to the players.
"We all collectively as a club need to keep trying to win games and have better performances than we've had." |
