'ENGLISH football fans are forced to pay the most expensive prices in
Europe for their season tickets, according to new research yesterday. A
survey of the top clubs in Europe found that English season tickets cost
more than six times that of the leading Italian clubs, five times that
of those in France and three times that of the Spanish.
Don Foster, the Liberal Democrat spokesman for Culture, Media and Sport,
said that tickets for the most expensive club, Arsenal, were more than
ten times as much as the cheapest in the survey, AC Milan.
His research involved examining the prices at the top two clubs in each
country’s national leagues last season, for the cheapest kind of season
ticket that had been on sale. These prices were compared with the top
eight European leagues based on Uefa’s rankings. Foster also gathered
evidence on price rises, showing that the leading English clubs were
putting up prices well above inflation. Chelsea, the Barclays
Premiership champions, have increased prices by a quarter since last
season, while at Arsenal they have gone up 10 per cent.
Foster said that urgent action is needed to stop fans been fleeced.
Because supporters are so loyal, he said the market does not work in the
normal way and an independent review was needed so that the sport
remains accessible.
But although Foster had asked the FA to look into the matter earlier
this year, there has been no response. The Premier League said the data
was flawed because it did not take account of “different club and
stadium ownership models”. |
