Bent: I thought it was joke
by Patrick Goss - created on 15 Aug 2005
Darren Bent has admitted that he thought that his surprise call up to the England squad was a hoax.
The Charlton striker crowned his Premiership debut with a brace, but his day got better when he was told that he had been called up to replace the injured Andy Johnson in the England squad to face Denmark.
However, the former Ipswich man believed it was too good to be true, until a second phone-call confirmed the news.
"Because the number didn't show up on my phone I thought it was a wind up," confirmed Bent.
"But they phoned again and explained and I was obviously over the moon.
"It was probably the best footballing day of my career and I am delighted to be here.
"I wasn't really thinking of England when I went to Charlton because my first aim was to get into their first team, but to get the England call up so early is a massive boost and a massive surprise.
"It would be brilliant if I could get a piece of the game - it would crown a brilliant week for me.
"I don't want to count my chickens, the main thing is to concentrate on Charlton and if I can do that well then hopefully many more occasions like this will come along." |
