With Pippo Inzaghi still struggling with injuries, the Rossoneri are eager to cover themselves with another striker as Milan Baros and Marco Di Vaio vie for a spot.
The 32-year-old forward has barely set foot on the field for the last two years following a succession of setbacks including ankle surgery, knee problems and a fractured arm. Professor Marc Martens claims he’ll be ready to resume full training at the end of August, but club officials are not so certain of his full recovery.
Although Alberto Gilardino and Christian Vieri have been drafted in to replace Hernan Crespo and Jon Dahl Tomasson, this still leaves them with the worries over Inzaghi’s status.
It’s now reported that the short-list for a new hitman has been whittled down to just two names – Di Vaio and Baros.
The Italian international has been linked to Milan throughout the summer, but seems to be content at Valencia and insisted last week that he wished to stay at the Mestalla. The fact that he has already featured for the Spaniards in the Intertoto Cup also suggests he won’t make the move, as he is now Cup-tied in Europe.
The more likely option is Liverpool’s want-away striker Baros, who has been pushed on to the sidelines at Anfield Road. Aston Villa and Schalke 04 have shown a marked interest in taking the Euro 2004 top scorer, but have been put off by his £6m price-tag.
There is a third solution and one that might suit the benchwarmer nature of this role, as Fiorentina are ready to part with Greek international Zisis Vryzas. There is already an offer on the table from Panathinaikos, but the former Perugia man would relish the opportunity to stay in Serie A with a top club. |
