Dyer injury hits Souness hard
Kieron Dyer has made a secret trip to Germany for a consultation with a leading specialist in an attempt to solve a fresh fitness complaint which threatens his hopes of enjoying an improved season at St James's Park.
And with Graeme Souness having conceded that Emre could face up to six weeks on the sidelines as a result of the hamstring problem he suffered while away on international duty this week, the Newcastle manager's Premiership plans were last night thrown into chaos.
A failure to record a convincing victory would only serve to increase the pressure on the beleaguered Magpies manager. Given the considerable obstacles he has already been forced to overcome this summer, Souness could have well done without the latest depressing developments.
Less than a week after voicing his confidence in Dyer's new-found resilience to the injuries which have blighted his career, the United boss was dismayed to discover that a back problem had sidelined the England midfielder after just one game of the new season.
The 26-year-old is scheduled to return to the North-East this weekend. And although the extent of the injury is not known, Souness is considering the prospect of losing Dyer for a significant period of time.
"Kieron is receiving some treatment over there (in Germany), and I understand he will be back this weekend," confirmed a St James's Park source last night.
"[The specialist will] look at everything. But it is not a serious situation. It is just to make sure he is going to be available for all the matches and not just some of them."
United's medical staff devised a new training regime for Dyer this summer in an attempt to ensure the former Ipswich favourite - a pivotal part of Souness' plans - remains fit. Where the latest development will leave a player who last week signed a lucrative new four-year deal are unclear - but it seems unlikely the club would have gone to such efforts were there not genuine concern.
The timing could not be worse given Emre's problems. The Turkish international suffered a torn hamstring during a friendly international against Bulgaria this week and is now facing a `lengthy' spell on the sidelines.
"The worst case scenario is that it could be six weeks," admitted Souness, furious that his talented 3.8m summer signing was injured in a non-competitive fixture.
"Hamstring problems can be quite lengthy. Emre has had a scan in Turkey and he has got a small tear. We're not sure of the extent of it just yet but it is an almighty blow to us.
"It's outrageous that this can happen in the modern game, I'm not best pleased about it and neither is he. The situation is beyond my understanding because these games are meaningless. They benefit no-one.
"We are in a unique business. If I ran a factory and I had 20 expensive machines which had cost me millions of pounds, would I let someone borrow them five or six times a year? Someone who was not going to pay me to borrow them, someone who would use and abuse them, someone who might bring them back broken? Of course not."
So deep have Souness' off-the-pitch problems run this week, the visit of West Ham has almost been overlooked. Having opened the season with a defeat - albeit with a creditable battling performance at Arsenal last weekend - it is a fixture of great significance.
"Every game in the Premiership is a dangerous game," said Souness, aware of the high stakes involved at St James's Park this afternoon. "This is a competitive league and we know what to expect.
"West Ham had a very good result against Blackburn last weekend and we know they will be a handful. We have to make sure we approach the game with the same attitude we did last week and make sure we are all at it."
