Mourinho won't let Carvalho go

Jose Mourinho has told unhappy defender Ricardo Carvalho he will not be allowed to quit Stamford Bridge in the wake of his public outburst against the Chelsea manager.

The Portuguese defender's public attack on Mourinho for leaving him out of the Community Shield clash with Arsenal and last Sunday's Premiership opener against Wigan ended with Carvalho being carpeted by the Chelsea supremo in front of the entire squad - including £24.4million new signing Michael Essien.

Carvalho: Unhappy being third choice.
Essien attended his first team meeting with his new team-mates only to witness Mourinho lambast Carvalho for criticising the coach's decision to leave him out of the side in favour of a central defensive partnership of William Gallas and skipper John Terry.

Mourinho was furious that Carvalho had gone public after the pair had spoken in private about the situation the night before their opening game at the JJB Stadium.

Carvalho claimed that it was 'incomprehensible' that he had been left out of the two line-ups and his words left Mourinho seething when he read them over the internet in Hungary.

Mourinho refused to allow Carvalho the chance to publicly apologise in the meeting and although the defender later said sorry to his team-mates and put out a statement to the fans regretting his words on the club's official website, the Chelsea boss had made his point in the most forceful way possible.

He was also adamant that no matter how unhappy Carvalho becomes without first team football, he will not allow him to leave the club under any circumstances so that he can prove a point to the rest of his squad.

Mourinho said: 'There is no chance of him leaving - especially after the interview. He has no chance of leaving because I cannot let a player go or sell a player when they give this kind of interview.

'It is easy for other players to think 'I want to leave, I'll give an interview against the manager.' So now, for sure, he stays here. No chance to leave and no offer can take him from Chelsea and he will have plenty of time to understand me. He wants to play and he is still a very important player for me.'

But there was no disguising Mourinho's anger at Carvalho's attitude. He is the first Chelsea player to criticise his team selections since he took charge at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho added: 'I saw the players together on Thursday for the first time since the Wigan game. I spent my meeting with them speaking about the arrival of Michael Essien and the beautiful interview of Ricardo Carvalho.

'I gave him no chance to speak. He wanted to but I gave him no chance. It was my meeting. I speak only and to the people I want. I didn't want him to speak. I think he spoke with the players on Friday morning but in my meeting, no.

'I don't have to speak with him again. I don't need to be in love with my players. I just need to have a correct relationship between a manager and a player. Everything is clear. He will not play on Sunday, it will be John Terry and William Gallas in defence against Arsenal. I will have to think whether he will be in the squad.

'I didn't want an apology from him. I never apologise to my players and I never want them to apologise to me. What I want is an open relationship where face to face we are strong enough to say what we feel. My disappointment is just that - he couldn't say it to my face. I was reading it in Hungary by internet and that's what I don't like.

'Imagine what is was like for Essien. He arrives yesterday in the dressing room for his first meeting with Chelsea and the manager kills Ricardo Carvalho in front of everybody.

Essien's arrival after weeks of protracted negotiations has delighted Mourinho who feels the the player can only strengthen a squad he believes can retain the title.

Mourinho said: 'He's dynamic, he is strong,. He can give us defensive and offensive abilities. Since the departure of Alexei Smertin or Scott Parker we don't have another player who can play in Claude Makelele's position. Makelele is now back playing international football for France so the risk of losing him for some matches is even bigger.

'This boy (Essien) can play in attacking positions and is our security if Makelele has a problem. Our squad stays very complete.'

Mourinho's side face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in what will be Arsene Wenger's 500th match in charge of the Gunners since arriving in north London nine years ago.
