BERGKAMP TARGETS EURO GLORY
Dennis Bergkamp insisted Arsenal's victory against Fulham proved they are still a "great team" despite their defeat at Chelsea as he targeted a Champions League success to crown his career.
Arsene Wenger had been worried at Arsenal's lack of self-confidence at Stamford Bridge as they failed to make the most of their advantage in terms of possession.
However, while the Gunners were still below their best against Fulham, they secured a 4-1 victory, and then managed to avoid one of the harder Champions League groups.
Arsenal, who have failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the competition, will face Ajax, Sparta Prague and Swiss side FC Thun to reach the knockout stages.
Bergkamp, who does not fly, should be able to make it back to Amsterdam to face Ajax, although Wenger may prefer to rest him from trips to the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
Either way, the 35-year-old striker, who is in his final season at the club, is hoping to go out on a high - by clinching Champions League success for the first time in his career.
"In my mind, the Premiership is always the most important but if you look at a list of titles which I haven't won, then that is something I would like to win and I am not the only one," he declared.
"We all realise that you don't get the chance to do it with a big team so many times in your career. The closest I have been is the last eight twice with Arsenal."
With Arsenal not involved in Premiership action this weekend due to Liverpool's participation in the Super Cup, their next league game is at Middlesbrough on September 10.
Their Champions League campaign begins just a few days later, yet Bergkamp believes the team have already recovered from the effects of their 1-0 defeat at Chelsea last weekend.
"It was important to respond after the defeat at Stamford Bridge and we responded well against Fulham," he declared.
"I don't think there is a problem with our confidence and self-belief but we need these sort of games to realise we are still a great team.
"We have lost Patrick Vieira and Edu since last season, while we didn't win the league, but that doesn't mean that you are a bad team and these sort of games help you get back to the right mental level." |
