United ready to move for Kuyt
Freddie Shepherd will have to part with almost £13m to lure Dirk Kuyt to Tyneside having seen Feyenoord rebuff a series of major bids for their much-coveted striker this summer.
Yet the Magpies could have signed the 25-year-old for a fraction of that fee after it emerged United's scouts were monitoring Kuyt almost four years ago, before his talents became universally recognised.
As Michael Owen continues to resist Newcastle's overtures - following talks, the Real Madrid man has yet to make a decision - Souness has earmarked Kuyt as an alternative target and an official approach has been made to his Eredivisie club.
The Dutch international's stock has risen sharply since November 2001, when Sir Bobby Robson identified a player beginning to make a name for himself at Utrecht.
Yet with Craig Bellamy, Lomana LuaLua, Carl Cort, Alan Shearer and Shola Ameobi all competing for a first-team place, a deal was put on ice.
It was Feyenoord who took a gamble on Kuyt and, in his two seasons at the De Kuip, an astonishing 51 goals in 70 league matches have more than justified a bargain £700,000 transfer.
Although Everton and Tottenham have had £10m offers rejected for a player also courted by Liverpool this summer, the Dutch club's valuation of their prized asset has not deterred United, who are willing to pay £16m to land Owen.
"We have shown an interest in Kuyt and that's about all I can say," said Graeme Souness who, having completed a £9m deal for Albert Luque, remains determined to sign a specialist striker before Wednesday's transfer deadline.
"He has got an incredible scoring record in Dutch football. Many people have described him as a young Alan Shearer. Whether that's true I don't know but I have heard it said. We have made an enquiry."
It seems that United's interest has not yet got as far as the tabling of a bid. With David Moyes having revealed that Everton were quoted £12.85m as the asking price on August 1, the Magpies know what will be required to prise Kuyt away from Rotterdam.
A player fast gaining a reputation as one of European football's most-ruthless strikers - he has scored 102 times in 230 appearances in the Dutch league. Given Owen's apparent determination to defer his decision for as long as possible, the Magpies can't afford to wait before deciding whether or not to press home their interest in Kuyt.
Should Feyenoord give any indication that they are prepared to sell at a price which suits Newcastle, Owen could find himself left in limbo.
Shepherd had attempted to force the striker's hand by issuing an ultimatum. But with Wednesday's deadline gone and still no decision having been made, the club's interest remains.
"There has never been any deadline regarding Owen," said Souness, who again underlined his determination to keep Tottenham target Jermaine Jenas on Tyneside. He insisted United do not need to sell the £10m-rated midfielder to help finance the signing of one of their striking targets.
Having taken his summer spending to £20m with the signing of Luque, that Shepherd is still spearheading the club's pursuit of Owen means he has pledged a staggering £36m to his manager.
