Newcastle were today awaiting the arrival of Michael Owen as they try to persuade him his future lies on Tyneside.


It is understood that the 25-year-old England striker is due in the north-east today to discuss a possible move to St James' Park, although with a trip to former club Liverpool planned, chairman Freddy Shepherd and manager Graeme Souness will have their work cut out to convince him his future is with the Magpies.

Owen was in the squad for Real Madrid's opening La Liga fixture in Cadiz, but did not even make the bench, fuelling speculation that his time at the Bernabeu Stadium is drawing to a close.


Newcastle have already agreed a club record fee with Real for the player, who has admitted he would consider a one-year loan deal at St James', but would prefer a permanent return to Anfield.


The Magpies' need for a proven goalscorer increased yesterday when they were beaten 2-0 at home by Manchester United despite £9.5million signing Albert Luque making his debut.


They have now gone four Barclays Premiership games this season without a win, have failed to score a goal, and have only one point - a return which leaves only Sunderland below them in the table.


Skipper Alan Shearer has spoken to his former international team-mate, who will miss his country's World Cup qualifier against Wales at the weekend through suspension, on several occasions and remains hopeful of lining up alongside him once again.


'It doesn't take a genius to work out who we want,' he told BBC Radio Five Live. 'We have three days left to try to convince him to come here.


'We're still in there fighting for him. I know if he came here he would be loved. They love their goalscorers up here and he would be a hero.


'I know better than anyone what reception he would get here. I've had several phone conversations with him but I don't have to tell him what passionate supporters we are. In the end he'll make his own mind up and will do what is best for himself.'


Newcastle have just three days to recruit Owen or one of their alternative targets - Nicolas Anelka and Luis Boa Morte have proved too expensive, while Feyenoord are reluctant to allow Dirk Kuyt to leave - with the transfer window due to close on Wednesday.

It's now been confirmed that Michael Owen is on Tyneside today (Monday) for signing talks - although he's expected to meet with Liverpool officials for similar negotiations before linking up with the England squad.

Owen didn't feature for Real Madrid in their opening Primera Liga game of the season on Sunday night, as they won 2-1 at Cadiz.

He'll join the England squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers in Wales and Northern Ireland on Saturday and Wednesday week  respectively - although he's suspended from the game in Cardiff.

The 25-year-old Real Madrid striker spent several hours with a delegation including Newcastle manager Graeme Souness and captain Alan Shearer.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd, his son Kenny and the coach Dean Saunders were also at the meeting in Northumberland.

Newcastle have agreed a £17m fee with the England star but Owen has said he prefers a return to Liverpool - with the Magpies only a loan option.

Owen, who must decide what to do before Wednesday's deadline, is also expected to meet Liverpool representatives while he is in England.

Owen met Benitez for two-and-a-half hours on Monday, after being left out of the Real side for their Primera Liga win at Cadiz on Sunday.

But the negotiatons are complicated by the Reds' reluctance to pay anything like the fee agreed by Newcastle.

KopTalk can reveal that Real Madrid striker Michael Owen has remained in the north east following his talks with Newcastle United this afternoon.

Having witnessed the former Liverpool ace arrive at Newcastle airport by private jet, we then followed Owen and his representatives to a Northumberland hotel along with a crew from Sky Sports. It was at this hotel that Owen's agent agreed personal terms with Newcastle.

We understand that Newcastle are offering the player around ￡20,000-a-week more than Liverpool but money isn't the motivating factor for the striker who wants to be playing football in the run-up to the World Cup Finals.

Following the talks Owen was whisked away in a vehicle with darkened out windows to be entertained at Alan Shearer's residence this evening. Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd then left the hotel in a Range Rover and headed back to St. James' Park with other club executives and they remain there at the time of this update.

Owen met Liverpool officials this morning but according to our source at Anfield, nothing was finalised to enable a transfer to Liverpool to go ahead before the August 31st deadline with work still to be done.

Our source told us: "Michael met the three of them this morning (Parry, Moores, Benitez) and was basically told that the club do want to sign him but that they will not be held to ransom by Real Madrid over the transfer fee.

"Liverpool are owed just short of ￡4million by Real Madrid and are prepared to wipe that debt and pay ￡6million in cash for him. This falls ￡7million short of what Newcastle have offered Real.

"The meeting was slightly subdued with Rafa continually asking Michael about why he was planning to talk to Newcastle officials in the afternoon. Michael explained that he was going to Newcastle as it was 'the right thing to do'.

"If Real Madrid accept Liverpool's offer then Michael will undergo a medical at Melwood and will sign for the club before the deadline.

"It is purely down to Real Madrid and Liverpool now. If they fail to agree a fee then it would appear that Michael will be a Newcastle player with his club already having agreed a transfer fee."

Sources at our sister site www.upthetoon.com believe that talks today were about a permanent deal and not a loan move as was first mooted. They say that Owen was impressed by Newcastle's facilities and general set-up but still wants a move to Anfield.
