28 Aug - The next three days is liable to be a flurry of rumours as the 31st
August transfer deadline approaches. We try to make some sense of some of
the more plausible links of recent days.
Benni McCarthy: The Sunday papers suggest that Everton and Manchester City
will duke it out for his signature, seemingly confirmed by some sources on
Merseyside that the Blues will land him before the deadline. Oh, and an
unconfirmed eye witness say that he's been spotted at the Radisson.
Robbie Keane: Word is that David Moyes has approached him but that he has no
interest in joining Everton, preferring instead to play a bit part in
Tottenham's life and living the "Lahndan" lifestyle.
If you believe the rumours, we've had two offers — £700,000 and £
00,000 — for David Nugent rejected by Preston North End. If Moyes is
serious about signing one of the Nationwide League's brightest prospects,
expect him to raise his bid to £1m.
Dickson Etuhu is a more likely arrival from Deepdale for £750,000 to
bolster the options in midfield.
Andy van der Meyde will sign tomorrow (as the Valente transfer proved, the
fact that Monday is a holiday will mean nothing this close to the deadline)
after the club were satisfied with his general fitness. He may not be
available in September, however, as he recovers from a groin injury.
Diego Tristan: Rangers and Everton are tracking the availability of
Deportivo's Spanish ace... although having lost Luque and Morientes in
recent seasons, would his current employers want to lose him?
