Spanish daily Marca has revealed that Newcastle had a 38 million euro bid for Fernando Torres rejected last week.
The English club were willing to pay the whole sum all at once, but Atletico Madrid turned the bid down, insisting he was not for sale.
Whether this means Michael Owen was a second choice remains to be seen, but what is certain is that the Magpies would not have signed both players.
Atletico also turned down a 36 million euro bid for Torres from the MSI group last week.
