Inter boss Roberto Mancini says he would like to sign Antonio Cassano, but concedes the Roma enigma will probably join Juventus.
The Italian has remained in the capital for now but a switch in January or next summer is likely given that his contract expires in 2006.
After being strongly associated with moves to Juventus and Milan, Mancini has put his club in the queue for the attacker’s services.
"I would happily take Cassano if there was that possibility," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday.
"I think he would fit in really well with this side even if it seems that he will be joining Juventus. That’s the general opinion anyway."
Cassano is widely regarded as one of Italy’s most talented youngsters, but he hasn’t established himself in the same manner that Mancini, Roberto Baggio and Alex Del Piero had done at his age.
"Perhaps Cassano is paying the price for his difficult character," explained Mancio. "However, nobody can question his ability as a footballer."
The transfer window closed on Wednesday with Inter failing to sign another right-back as cover for the injured Javier Zanetti.
"Bringing in another defender would have been useful," admitted the Coach. "It doesn’t matter though, I’m happy with what I already have at my disposal."
There was also talk that the club were looking for a fifth striker but Mancini explained that wasn’t a priority.
"It wasn’t a necessity, it would have just given us a little extra cover if Obafemi Martins plays in the African Cup of Nations," he added. "We’re fine in attack."
