King: Jenas can become our Vieira
Spurs skipper Ledley King has hailed the 7m signing of Jermaine Jenas by claiming the former Newcastle man can become as influential for Tottenham as Patrick Vieira was for Arsenal.
King issued the claim after being quizzed on the strengths of his England colleague following his move to White Hart Lane, and Ledley feels there are many similiarities between Jenas and a young Vieira.
King said: "Jermaine is getting stronger all of the time and I can see him being quite similar to Vieira in the way he plays. Hopefully he can be just as important for us too."
Jenas earned himself a reputation as one of the brightest young prospects in the game following his switch from Nottingham Forest to Newcastle in 2002, culminating in him scooping the PFA Young Player of the Year award during 2003.
Despite that the youngster appeared to lose his way somewhat at St James Park and demanded a transfer during the summer after claiming life in Newcastle was like ‘living in a goldfish bowl’.
That sparked a scramble for the box-to-box player who is renowned for his ability to both attack and defend in equal measure with Spurs seemingly desperate to land the player to add to their already burgeoning collection of England Internationals.
Ironically Arsenal themselves were strongly linked with a move for the energetic midfielder after Vieira was sold to Juventus, although Arsene Wenger baulked at the then 20million fee touted by Newcastle boss Graeme Souness.
