Personally, I feel a best goalkeeper ability equalize 2 best defenders. Without a good goalkeeper, even u got 4 world class defenders equal useless. This is what I found out one of the weak point in FM05 which is pretty unrealistic.

if you have good defenders the opponent cant even attack, so it doesnt matter whether your GK is worldclass....

i personally find that performance of GK is more important than his abilities

I do agree good defenders are able to block apart of the attacking but not all. With a week goalkeeper against the good attackers, no matter how good is the goalkeeper performance. They still easily lose the goal.

According to my experience, I always try to bid away the goalkeeper from MU/Arsenal/Chelsea. In a season, if 3 of them can't secure a good goalkeeper. Simply you can see their ranking will not be on the top of table.

The attached pic is just for the reference. I won chelsea in first round 5-0 & 10-1 for 2nd round. But i lost to MU/Arsenal due to their goalkeeper & overall players are good as well.

To conclude my opinion, both defender & goalkeeper are also important but goalkeeper has to be higher priorty than defender.

PS: The above bull shit are just my personal experience.
