Prem: Best Eleven Of The Week
Jamie Obertelli selects a tem of players who caught the eye in the Premiership at the weekend…
1 Edwin Van Der Sar (Manchester United): The United stopper could do nothing to prevent his side conceding their first goal of the season. The former Juventus man has had a calming effect on the players in front of him, as they seem to have the utmost confidence in him. The Dutchman produced the save of the season so far to deny City all three points in the closing stages of the game.
2 Lee Young-Pyo (Tottenham): Martin Jol’s new recruit looked at home on his debut for the North London side. The summer capture from PSV looked solid in defence and was a constant attacking threat down Tottenham’s left flank.
3 Ryan Nelsen (Blackburn): New Zealander Nelsen was at his robust and physical best against Bolton. Trotters striker Davies has made his name by bullying and hassling defenders but could find no way past Nelsen. Nelsen’s uncompromising style was vital as Blackburn picked up a point.
4 Ledley King (Tottenham): King was impressive as his side kept Liverpool quiet all game. The England defender was outstanding last season and will be looking to make further progress this term as Tottenham look to qualify for Europe.
5 Lauren (Arsenal): The only Arsenal player that looked assured against Middlesbrough. Lauren’s tough tackling and uncompromising play will be needed more than ever if Arsenal are to regain their ‘invincible’ edge.
6 Charles N’Zogbia (Newcastle): With all eyes on Owen it was N’Zogbia that hauled Newcastle back into the game and gave them their first goal of the season. The French youngster curled a stunning free kick into the top left hand corner, capping an impressive display for the Magpies.
7 Aleksandr Hleb (Arsenal): Arsenal’s only major summer signing has looked impressive since his debut for the Gunners. The Belarussian international ripped Boro apart in the first half and looked a major threat with some good forward runs.
8 Michael Essien (Chelsea): The club’s record signing was played in Makelele’s position after the Frenchman was injured on international duty. Essien was by far the best player on the pitch and looks to be worth the money spent on him.
9 Lomana Lua Lua (Portsmouth): The Congolese striker was influential as Pompey recorded their first win of the season at Everton. Lua Lua’s all action display helped inspire his team to a vital victory. In this current vein of form the former Newcastle man looks unstoppable.
10 Darren Bent (Charlton): The kind of player Arsenal should have bought in the summer. Bent has scored in every game so far and deservedly tops the scoring charts. The former Ipswich man looks full of confidence at the moment and seems to have little regard for the reputations of the league’s experienced defenders.
11 Yakubu (Middlesbrough): Boro’s record signing scored his first goal for his new club, downing Arsenal in the process. With the Nigerian up front, Boro look a more deadly outfit. |
