Wagner Ribeiro: Casillas Is Not Good Enough For Real
9/17/2005 2:36:00 PM
Flamboyant agent Wagner Ribeiro, one of the architects of Robinho’s move to Madrid, has publicly railed against several members of the current Real Madrid squad in a controversial series of declarations made on Brazilian TV. The businessman was particularly hard on goalie Iker Casillas.
During a round robin discussion on ‘Bandeirantes’ TV programme (12:00 Brazil) ‘Esporte Total’ – despite the name, almost exclusively reporting and discussing football – Ribeiro let off steam at what he saw as the dubious quality of some of Robinho’s team-mates in the Merengue club.
“He’s too short, and his defensive positioning is awful – two of the goals in the game against Lyon were his fault. In my opinion he’s not good enough for Real Madrid.” He went on to criticise Gravesen “He doesn’t advance and go for the game” before giving a coup de grace with the spurious statement that “some of the players there wouldn’t cut it in the Brazilian second division.”
The agent, facially an odd cross between ex-Barcelona President Joan Gaspart and Roger Ramjet, used extremely defensive body language – his arms tightly folded and lips angrily stiffened – while he shot off criticism left, right and centre. With the December transfer window being advertised as early as Xmas these days, could it be an advantage marketing strategy?
