  FC Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has put pen-to-paper on a contract extension with the club that will keep him at Camp Nou until June 30, 2010 and sees his buy-out clause rise to 150million.

His current deal was due to run out on June 30, 2007, but he has agreed to extend that by three more years. This agreement is another step along the road to Barca's aim of securing the spine of the first-team on long-term deals. On Friday, Puyol will attend a press conference to talk about his new deal after training at 13:00.

Since making his Barca debut on October 2, 1999, against Valladolid, Puyol has become a key member of the squad. After starting out on the right of the defence, the Lleida-born player is now a permanent fixture in the centre of Frank Rijkaard's defence.

He has worn the captain's armband for two years and is highly regarded by team-mates and supporters alike for his strong character, his leadership and for the fact that he knows what it means to wear the colours of FC Barcelona, a club he truly identifies with.

Puyol: "I want to retire in Barca"

Carles Puyol spoke to the press on Friday morning about his recent contract extension and revealed that he would like to spend the rest of his footballing career with the Club.

Just 24 hours after signing the new deal, which will keep him at the Club until 2010, Carles Puyol appeared before reporters at the Nou Camp. The team captain spoke with his habitual clarity and caution about his feelings for the Club and his delight at the results of the negotiations: "I' very happy to be here for the next five years. In football, you have to work hard every day and my wish is to retire here but I know that'll be difficult".

Right from the moment Carles Puyol made his first-team debut six years ago, the defender has been characterised by his tremendous fighting spirit. Having now committed himself to the Club for a further five years, he assured reporters he would carry on with the same commitment as always and that there was no chance of his resting on his laurels: "Although I've renewed my contract, I've no intention of changing my attitude".

Rotations

As team captain, and as a friend and teammate, Carles Puyol was also eager to comment on the absence of Deco and Ronaldinho from the squad list for Saturday's game: "The squad is very big. They're two extremely important men and nobody is denying that but we'll give 100% as always. We can't blame two players for the team's performances. The coach will give the appropriate explanations but I believe it's a case of rotations and giving them a rest".
