Sou wrong to sell me - O'Brien
FORMER Newcastle United defender Andy O'Brien is determined to show Graeme Souness what he is missing tomorrow.
Souness sold the Republic of Ireland international to Portsmouth in the summer for 1m, and O'Brien is set to be the only one of Portsmouth's quartet of former Magpies to play at Fratton Park.
And he said: "I was told I wasn't wanted by Graeme Souness. He said it was nothing personal – but it was his opinion. Likewise, Sir Bobby Robson thought I was the kind of player he wanted at the club when he signed me.
"Sometimes circumstances work for you, sometimes they don't – and a change of manager can bring different circumstances.
"Souness explained to me that I wouldn't be a first choice centre-half. I had three years on my contract and could have sat on my backside, but I've got a bit more ambition than that.
"Now I'm looking forward to the game and getting the right result."
O'Brien will be tasked with keeping Michael Owen – who has scored in successive games – and Alan Shearer off the scoresheet.
He added: "Newcastle seem to have picked up since Michael Owen went there, and Alan Shearer's scored more Premiership goals than anyone else.
"There are lots of players who have played with Alan who he has then gone on to score against.
"I don't need to talk up Alan Shearer. His record speaks for itself. He's a model pro who has respect from younger and older players alike.
"He's captained his country and is obviously very popular in Newcastle. Alan is the best in the business at what he does so he demands respect – but not too much.
"Newcastle seemed to have picked up since Michael Owen has gone there, which is the kind of impact they were hoping for him to have.
"But they have other players in the team apart from Michael Owen and Alan Shearer."
