SOUNESS TACKLES A DYER SITUATION
GRAEME SOUNESS has brought in another club doctor in an attempt to solve Kieron Dyer's ongoing injury problems. The England midfielder had been expected to take the field against Portsmouth on Saturday . . .
But a setback in his recovery from a hamstring strain - in which Dyer started complaining of pain in BOTH legs - has prompted a worried Newcastle management to take action, bringing in Dr Guy Stevenson to help get one of the club's prize assets back in actioin.
"We have employed a new club doctor, it's up to him now," sadi Souness. "He is an orthopaedic specialist who has been working in Newcastle.
"It is a concern. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was career threatening but it is a concern. I want to get him on the pitch. He has a problem with his hamstrings, both of them I believe, and he will be hurting and frustrated at this time.
"He loves playing football, he is desperate to play and we're all desperate for him. He can see I have brought good players in and he wants to be out on the pitch with them."
Meanwhile, Souness has revealed that Titus Bramble's non-appearance at Fratton Park was also due to a hamstring strain - though not as serious as Dyer's
"Titus trained but he didn't feel free, he has a bit of tightness in his hamstring and we didn't want to take the risk," he said.
Striker Michael Owen has recovered from his dead leg - sustained in a training ground clash with Steven Taylor - and is set to play for England in their two upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
