Xavier in drugs test failure

Middlesbrough's Abel Xavier has failed a drugs test and has picked up an immediate world-wide ban, subject to a disciplinary hearing.

The Teessiders have confirmed that the 32-year-old was tested following their Uefa Cup tie with FC Xanthi in September and his urine sample came back positive.

Fifa has now accordingly suspended Xavier until an investigation is completed.

Boro revealed that Xavier, who was tested under Uefa rules, would be making a statement about the situation on Tuesday.

Xavier was not involved at all in Boro's last match with Portsmouth on Saturday.
