The differences:
a) Palace gives you a defense-bonus
b) You can build at level 10, 15 and 20 of a palace 3 new settlers or a chieftain, but you can only build at level 10 and 20 of a residence 3 new settlers or a chieftain (note: for level 20 of a palace you need 2 warehouses)
c) If you have less then 4 villages, a village with a palace can not be conquered (the palace can't be destroyed then)
d) As said in the instructions, you can build a palace only in one of your villages (main village), but you can build a residence in each village (at least if there is no palace)
