Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he cannot fathom why Michael Ballack would want to join Manchester United.
The 29-year-old playmaker is out of contract at the end of the season and will decide on his future by Christmas.
Rummenigge told Premiere television: "What would speak for Manchester United against Bayern Munich? Nothing - if you take a look at the table in England.
"I cannot imagine he would go there. If I were a player I would not go there."
Ballack, who scored Bayern's first in the 4-0 win over Duisburg, has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Munich.
But Rummenigge also believes that a potential transfer to Spain and Real Madrid would also be a mistake.
"Real Madrid are obviously a club with an incredible image but, as we have seen, they have not won anything at all in the last two years," he added.
The German media has suggested that Juventus and AC Milan are also interested in Germany's captain.
Bayern have reportedly offered Ballack a four-year contract and Rummenigge said: "We are negotiating fairly and without any dispute at all."
