Athletic act to arrest decline

The bottom side in the Primera División, Athletic Club Bilbao, have sacked coach José Luis Mendilibar after just four months in charge, with Javier Clemente in the frame to take over.
'Sad and difficult'
"It is a very sad and difficult day for the club because it isn't a nice decision to take," said Athletic president Fernando Lamikiz. "We are losing a great coach and a great person who we had hoped would be a long-term appointment." Mendilibar becomes the first coach in the Spanish top flight to lose his job this season.
Brief reign
He took over from Ernesto Valverde, who resigned at the end of 2004/05, in June having been recruited from second division side SD Eibar. After his new charges started the season with a victory against Basque rivals Real Sociedad de Fútbol, Bilbao have sunk to the foot of the table having taken six points from their first ten league games. Press reports are linking former Spain coach Javier Clemente with a return to the club he led to consecutive league titles in 1983 and 1984. |
