France 3-2 Costa Rica
FORT-DE-FRANCE, November 9 (Friendly) - France fought back from a 2-0 deficit at half time to claim a 3-2 victory over Costa Rica in a friendly in Martinique on Wednesday evening.
First half goals from Alvaro Saborio and Danny Fonseca silenced the 16,000 fans who had come to support Les Bleus.
However, Nicolas Anelka, making his first international appearance since April 2002, Djibril Cisse and Thierry Henry all netted in the second period to secure a win in front of a packed Dillon arena.
The match, a historical first as the French team have never played in the French Caribbean, was partly organised to commemorate the 152 Martinique-born victims of a plane crash on August 16 with some of the money at the gate due to be given to their families.
Seven of the French players who started the match - Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Lilian Thuram, Florent Malouda, Sylvain Wiltord, Eric Abidal and William Gallas - have family roots in the region.
France started well and in the sixth minute a corner from Malouda almost went in before Anelka's shot was saved by goalkeeper Jose Francisco Porras.
The opener was for the visitors however with Saborio stunning Fabien Barthez after 14 minutes of play.
Anelka had a golden opportunity to level in the 33rd when his shot hit Porras' left-hand post.
Barthez completed a save in the 40th following Ronald Gomez's free-kick but the visitors struck again one minute later.
Barthez came out to punch the ball clear but failed to reach it and an unmarked Fonseca headed the ball in.
France got on the scoresheet early in the second half as Anelka reduced the arrears when he netted Les Bleus' first goal following a cross from Henry.
France held on to their nerves until the last 10 minutes of the match when they scored two more goals.
Cisse equalised in the 80th minute, netting his ninth goal in the blue shirt after a pass from midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo.
Henry's clever backheel with his standing foot sealed the win for France against a Costa Rica team that will also play in next year's World Cup.
