Patrick Vieira claims Wayne Rooney dived to win the penalty which helped Manchester United end Arsenal's 49-match unbeaten league run last season.
The England striker went down under challenge from Gunners defender Sol Campbell as United won 2-0 at Old Trafford.
Vieira is enjoying life in Turin.
Former Arsenal skipper Vieira, now with Juventus, insists he was surprised at what he saw as gamesmanship by the 20-year-old.
He told BBC Radio Five Live: 'When I came to England you had this kind of fair play, and fair play is a big word in this country.
'Of course when you learn about it you are quite surprised that an English player is doing it (diving) because you are not expecting them to do that.
'You can understand maybe someone in France to come to England and to do it, but when you are playing in England and you grow up in this country you don't expect them to do it.
'So I was quite surprised when Wayne Rooney did it. But when you think about it, that's happening in every country in every league and you accept that now that's maybe part of the game. But that has killed the game and made the job of the referee more difficult.'
Vieira also branded Rooney's United strike partner Ruud van Nistelrooy a cheat in his new autobiography and insists he does not have 'any respect' for the Dutchman.
The 29-year-old has revealed his departure from Arsenal came after Gunners vice-chairman David Dein said the club were 'neutral' as to whether he stayed or left.
The France midfielder committed himself to the north London club in the summer of 2004 after being close to a move to Real Madrid.
However, when Juventus tested the waters this summer they were met with a very different response.
Vieira added: 'Mr Dein said 'we are neutral on this one, Patrick'. If you want to keep a player, you just say 'you're not leaving'.
'When they say they're neutral, it's time to go.'
